"Not in our Town"
comes to charleston nov. 4

Not In Our Town logo
Filmmaker Patrice O'Neill, producer of the award winning PBS documentary Not In Our Town, will be in Charleston to talk about creative, community-based approaches to intolerance. O'Neill will present short films and features from NIOT.org, a new social networking site and tool set for people working to stop hate crimes and build inclusive communities.

Not In Our Town
is focused on the stories of ordinary people who take action in the face of hate crimes, and the civic leaders, activists and school leaders who are examining the underlying tensions that can lead to the violent manifestations of hate. The ultimate goal of the project is to share knowledge and encourage community activity that will help create communities that are inclusive and safe for everyone.

november 15-21
national homelessness and hunger awareness week

Join us in raising awareness about homelessness in our Homelessnesscommunity and meet individuals whose lives have been touched by community providers in our area.  On Tuesday, November 17, 2009, the WV Mental Health Consumers Association and the Kanawha Valley Collective will be sponsoring a "One Night Without a Home" Awareness Sleep Out at Magic Island in Charleston.

The program will begin at 6:00 pm and include speakers, a candlelight vigil, live music, and facilitated discussion groups. The formal program will conclude by midnight when folks will be encouraged to bed down for the night.

This event is part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. "One Night" is an opportunity for residents to spend a night outside to discuss, think, and learn about homelessness. Although one night outside can in no way simulate homelessness, this awareness-raising activity will promote advocacy and education for those with the fewest resources.

Also, be sure to look around town Nov. 15-21 for our "One Less Child Homeless" alley installations, meant to bring awareness to the 332 homeless children we served last year alone at the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter.

spotlight on:

Nell Fleming
Racial Justice and Hate/
Bias Crimes Training Coordinator

Nell Fleming

Nell Fleming is the newest addition to the YWCA team, thanks to our Board of Directors' Eliminating Racism Committee and its associated community group, One Kanawha. In this new position, she will coordinate a one-year, statewide, racial justice training project, facilitate statewide trainings in racial justice and hate/bias crime issues, and develop a model community dialogue, among other responsibilities. Within just a few weeks of taking on this new position, Nell sparked a racial justice conversation through a thought-provoking Op-Ed piece in the Charleston Gazette regarding an interracial couple denied marriage license in Louisiana:

You may have recently read the New York Times story out of Louisiana regarding Keith Bardwell's decision to deny an interracial couple a marriage license because he "doesn't believe in mixing the races that way."

I knew when I took the position of Racial Justice Coordinator for the YWCA that I would have to face some ugly truths. I expect to face some things I might rather not think about in the next year or two, and I've steeled myself for them. I must say though, it doesn't surprise me that Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell in Hammond, La., believes it is wrong to marry interracial couples. When my husband and I announced our engagement, we received heartfelt letters and phone calls from family who begged us to "consider the children." Even 20 years ago it felt like an outdated attitude.
