ywca vs. nautilus membership
what's the difference?

YogaWe are frequently asked what the difference is between YWCA membership and HPS/Nautilus membership, so we'd like to help clear up any confusion. The YWCA's Health Promotion Service (HPS) program is operated by Nautilus Fitness Center, Inc., a for-profit organization with 26 years of experience in health and fitness. Membership in HPS/Nautilus gives you use of the fitness facility in the YWCA's headquarter building as well as Nautilus's three other sites. Conversely, membership in the YWCA is a small, yearly tax deductible gift to support the YWCA's mission and programs and gives members voting rights at annual meetings. how much does $24 mean to a woman or child in need?   24logo
take the 24 for 24 pledge

Did you know that just $24 a month will provide a whole month of nutritious meals for a child at the YWCA Child Enrichment Center, 2 ½ hours of tutoring to at-risk homeless children at the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter, or a professional outfit including shoes and a purse from YWCA Past & Present for a woman going on job interviews for the first time in her life? To many of us $24 a month may mean buying a few less lattes or packing lunch rather than eating out. However, to the people we serve, it can change lives. Read all 24 ways your $24 can make a difference here >>>

Then sign up for the 24 for 24 Pledge today and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar through the YWCA $2 Million Challenge. 24 dollars. 24 months. Countless lives changed.
$2 million challenge update:
$1,534,930 raised

We only have six more months to reach our $2 million mark. Unless we reach this critical mark by Dec. 31, 2009, we will not receive our dollar-for-dollar matching gift from the Lyell B. & Patricia K. Clay Foundation to endow our social service programs in perpetuity. Our Vintage 3 event on June 18 raised $16,604 for the $2 Million Challenge, but we still need to raise another $465,070 and we can't do it without your help. Donate online today or contact Lesli Beavers at lbeavers@ywcacharleston.org or (304) 340-3584 for pledge cards and naming opportunities.

spotlight on:  imogene bennington

a glimmer of hope
to the homeless

Imogene Bennington

Imogene Bennington is far more than just a volunteer at the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter. For five years, she has volunteered full time in YWCA Sojourner's front office. Imogene, a retiree, dutifully works 8+ hour days Monday through Friday - more than 160 hours each month. Her name appears on every staff schedule, and her daily contributions include assisting the shelter's residents (which average 65 daily), answering phones, clerical work, and helping monitoring residents' medication. Although she refuses to reveal her age, we do know that she worked at the WV American Water Company for 52 years! Even after suffering the loss of her husband and battling breast cancer, Imogene still decided to dedicate her time to helping the homeless and those in greatest need in our community. Her invaluable contributions have saved YWCA Sojourner's more than $21,000 each year - a saving grace for any nonprofit organization during these tough economic times.
Imogene's true value, however, lies in her sweet and sincere spirit. Each day, she listens to residents' questions and concerns, offers advice sincerely and without judgment, and sets an example to other staff with her diligence and hard work. Thanks to the dedication of Imogene Bennington and the rest of the YWCA Sojourner's staff and volunteers, last year alone we were able to provide 19,202 nights of shelter to 1,080 homeless individuals - 338 of which were children.
