And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.
And as we leave this mountain top, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.
Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little angelic Sasha and Malia.
We go now to walk together as children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone.
With your hands of power and your heart of love, help us now, Lord, to work for that day when nations shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid, when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right.
Let all those who do justice and love mercy say 'Amen.'
The Rev. James E. Lowery United Methodist Clergy, retired; co-founder and former President, Southern Christian Leadership Conference Inaugural Benediction (excerpt) January 20, 2009
"Amen!"

Recent Crisis in Gaza...and the broader picture coming soon to the cal-pac mfsa website
On the left: This graphic of the peace sign with photos of Palestine was found at the website of Jewish American author, Anna Baltzer. We would recommend reading her recent entries for articulate first-hand accounts of life and war in Palestine and Israel: www.annainthemiddleeast.com/
Many of her recommendations for action are excellent as well: for example, you might read the blog entry "What most US media isn't telling you."
Last month's bombing of Gaza and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe has deeply troubled many of us and filled our mailboxes with heartfelt pleas for help, angry messages of blame, and insightful analyses of the ongoing struggles in Palestine and Israel. Because of the sheer volume of information available, and the limits of this news format, we will refrain from listing here the many excellent articles, statements, and other reading that we would like to provide. We are in the process of organizing and providing material at our website that we hope will help our readers understand the most recent events, underlying causes, the history of the conflict and possible solutions to reach a just peace for both Palestinians and Israelis. Of course, being MFSA, we will also provide suggestions of what we each can do to support the peoples of the Middle East in their quest for that elusive - yet we believe, inevitable - goal of a just and peaceful co-existence. When this information is ready, you will find a special button for "Palestine & Israel" prominently displayed on our home page: www.cal-pacmfsa.org. And we will send you word of it too!

Repower America Al Gore's call to action - the time has come for a Green economy
See the plan for America to make the transition to a clean energy economy - http://www.repoweramerica.org/plan/ and send a message to Congress at his website.
On
Wed, Jan 28, Al Gore testified before the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee about repowering America and the need for us to resume global
leadership on the climate crisis.
His message to the country: it's a critical time in our country and we all have a role to play.

He has recorded a short video message to share his perspective on what's at stake right now. To see it, use this YouTube address - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdLsLyl5-kA OR see it at the Repower America website: http://www.RepowerAmerica.org/RecoveryVideo
In Congress, our leaders are debating an economic recovery package. It includes unprecedented support for putting Americans back to work building a clean energy economy.
But entrenched interests in Washington will be working hard to weaken the legislation -- opposing funding for clean energy programs that support things like wind, solar, energy efficiency and a new national electric grid.
As members of Congress work out the details of a bill that can pass both the House and the Senate, it's important that you let each of your elected representatives know that you want the recovery to be about repowering America.
You and I know that continuing with the status quo will not revitalize the U.S. economy. Please make sure your elected officials know, too.
Watch the video and send a quick note to Congress at the same website: http://www.RepowerAmerica.org/RecoveryVideo

Employee Free Choice Act
This year, President Obama and Congress have the opportunity to enact one of the most important reforms in decades.

The Employee Free Choice Act would fundamentally change the process by which workers can join a union, restoring fairness to a process that has all but made a mockery of the democratic rights protected in many other countries.
To learn more about the Employee Free Choice Act and ways you can support the campaign, visit the website of American Rights At Work: http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/employee-free-choice-act/home.
Go straight to the Petition of support for the Employee Free Choice Act: http://www.freechoiceact.org/page/s/araw?source=arawweb&subsource=sidebar.
In our activities supporting the work of CLUE-LA and LAANE, MFSAers so often have witnessed the ability of workers to affect deep change in their lives through organizing. We know that the right of workers to freely organize their workplaces is a moral imperative, and families and communities are strengthened when workers can bargain for fair wages, adequate benefits, and safe working conditions.
Protecting the right to form unions is about maintaining the American middle class. It's no coincidence that as union membership numbers fall there are growing numbers of jobs with low pay, poor benefits, and little to no security. More than half of U.S. workers-60 million-say they would join a union right now if they could.
Why? They know that coming together to bargain with employers over wages, benefits, and working conditions is the best path to getting ahead. Workers who belong to unions earn 30 percent more than non-union workers, and are 63 percent more likely to have employer-provided health care. Without labor law reform, economic opportunity for America's working families will continue to erode.

Corporate interests are fighting the Employee Free Choice Act with everything they've got. They're protecting the status quo - a system which allows employers to intimidate, harass, and even fire workers who try to form a union.
Sign the petition in support of this landmark legislation for workers' rights: http://www.freechoiceact.org/page/s/araw?source=arawweb&subsource=sidebar

Support National Single-Payer Healthcare Legislation - HR 676

Did you know? According to several national polls and surveys, affordable, high quality health care for all Americans is the NUMBER ONE issue that concerns that the US public. HR 676 is a great chance to reach that goal - scroll down to read the essential information about the bill.
On Jan 25, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said on C-SPAN that he would oppose any comprehensive health care reform in 2009.
And the next day, Judiciary Chairman John Conyers reintroduced HR 676, the single-payer health bill. Last year, HR 676 was co-sponsored by 93 members of Congress, including James Clyburn!
Clyburn needs to know that he cannot take single-payer health care off the table. Healthcare-NOW! together with its allies in the progressive community ask that you help flood Congressman Clyburn's DC office with your phone calls asking him to keep single-payer on the table and to co-sponsor HR 676.
See below a summary of this groundbreaking legislation. You can also learn more at: www.healthcare-now.org.
Here's what you can do (take your pick!): 1- Make Phone Calls a. Congressman Clyburn b. your own congress representative c. your Senators
2 - Get an endorsement from your organization
3 - Lobby for the bill at reps' offices
1- Make Phone Calls (1a) Call Congressman Clyburn, the House Majority Whip, and ask him to whip up support for HR 676: 202-225-3315
(1b) Call YOUR member of Congress and your state's Senators and ask them to support and co-sponsor HR 676: 202-224-3121
To find your Representative in House of Representatives, go to: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
Our California Senators are:
Senator Dianne Feinstein 202-224-3841 or 202-228-3954 http://feinstein.senate.gov/email.html
Senator Barbara Boxer 202-224-3553 or 202-228-2382 http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/email/policy.cfm

When making your calls to Congress - suggestions from California Church IMPACT: - Ask your Representative if they are a co-psonsor of HR 676.
- If your member is a current co-sponsor, thank your rep. and ask him or her to stand firm for HR 676 and actively seek additional co-sponsors.
- If your member was a co-sponsor in the last Congress, ask him or her to sign on immediately as a co-sponsor in this Congress.
- If your member has yet to co-sponsor HR 676, ask him or her to please become a co-sponsor, select one or two talking points here:
HR676 would provide healthcare through an improved and expanded Medicare model for all with no co-pays, no deductibles, no premiums and no interference in the healthcare professionals' relationship with patients -- no insurance company involvement in clinical decisions. HR676 is a publicly funded, privately delivered healthcare reform plan that would give patients the choice of doctors and providers that many do not have under private, for-profit plans.
HR676 would save this nation billions in both public and private health costs. As Medicare delivers outstanding health care coverage for those over 65 at vastly lower prices, HR676 would do the same for all residents of the US.
What could be better? Health care with the freedom to choose your own physician, hospitals, and other services, all paid at a rate pegged to your income that saves you and the government money? It also assures that we'd have NO uninsured. And that is the greatest gift of all. Please support HR676 and ask your Representative to do the same!
2 - Get an endorsement If your organization passes a resolution in support of HR 676, you can endorse this legislation at the HealthCare-Now! website. Visit this page - http://www.healthcare-now.org/petition/endorse/ - to see the long list of endorsements, and the link for the Contact Page to add yours.

Read about The United States National Health Insurance Act, H.R. 676 Introduced by Rep. John Conyers http://www.healthcare-now.org/hr-676/
Brief Summary of the Legislation The United States National Health Insurance Act establishes a unique American national universal health insurance program. The bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered healthcare system that uses the already existing Medicare program by expanding and improving it to all U.S. residents, and all residents living in U.S. territories. The goal of the legislation is to ensure that all Americans will have access, guaranteed by law, to the highest quality and most cost effective healthcare services regardless of their employment, income, or healthcare status. With over 45-75 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million who are under- insured, the time has come to change our inefficient and costly fragmented non-healthcare system. Our Budget IS a Moral Document Contact the governor and legislators An important message from California Church IMPACT with another from California Partnership below
The California state budget. With all the hope held out now for America, the problems here in California are heartbreaking. Rather than move along the paths of increased responsiveness for our citizens, the state Legislature remains mired in obstruction and even "crony capitalism".
There are no clear policies yet that will close the two-year, $40 billion budget gap. Yes, we may well receive federal money that would supply over half of the shortfall, but the pressure to cut programs - deep cuts for those already in dire need - is very real.
A few of the worst cuts include: - cuts scheduled for those on CalWORKs who have not received a cost-of-living increase in years; - eligibility reductions for Medi-Cal that are so deep even people on disability might not be eligible for Medi-Cal; - eligibility reductions for In-Home Support Services to people who live in their own home, but may be headed for institutions without that care; - pay reductions for those providing the In-Home Supportive Services; - cuts in higher education enrollments; - statewide cuts in Kindergarten through 12th grade funding.
Another proposal which would be helpful - to raise tax rates to the levels in the 1990s - has been met with huge resistance. Those in opposition say that to be "fair" everyone should have to pay that level of taxes.
However, the people suffering the proposed cuts - and in many cases one family would be hit with reductions in support, child care, AND medical care - would ALSO be asked to pay higher taxes! That is not "fair."
There also are very ugly demands from business lobbyists who are demanding changes in two important state policies: (1) an end to all environmental regulations for construction projects and (2) massive changes in labor laws to "free" employers from heavy burdens such as providing lunch.
These will in no way fix our budget problems, will not add revenue for the state or cut costs, but they will be giveaways to the state Chamber of Commerce and businesses that donate heavily to the conservative legislators and the governor.
This is nothing short of extortion. For legislators to "horse trade" such non-budget items and hold votes on the budget hostage until they get these demands is actually illegal. It is considered a form of bribery and is forbidden by Section 86 of the State Penal Code.
The Governor is not bound by that law, but where are his ethics? He also is demanding cuts - up to 10% - from ordinary state workers but not ANY of his high-paid appointees. In fact, he just created a new, $128,000 position for a termed-out legislator he rewarded for her endorsement of a favored candidate.
We are living in a time when our moral values will be made clear by the choices we make in our government budget. Yes - our budget IS a moral document of our state's values.
Please call or email your legislator today, tomorrow, each day until this state comes to its senses. It is easy to reach them through the California Church IMPACT website. The message is this: justice demands that "from him, to whom much is given, much is required" and that we cannot run a healthy state by extracting care for those in the most dire conditions.
Send an email, a FAX, or phone your legislators by going to our California Church IMPACT link at: http://capwiz.com/cachurches/directory/statedir.tt?state=CA&lvl=state
Let them know that no government, no society, no civilization ever prospered that abandoned the most fragile of its members to protect the wealth of the powerful. We need a budget for ALL people, and we need it today!
Learn how California spends the money in our budget. At the Cal-Pac MFSA website, read an excellent article, recommended by IMPACT, that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, "Who increased state spending in California?": www.cal-pacmfsa.org/CA_State_Budget.html
|
Download the flyer (there are 2 sides in 2 pdf files) at the Cal-Pac MFSA website: www.cal-pacmfsa.org/CA_State_Budget.html It
has great information about what this proposed budget will do to those
most vulnerable in our communities: children, elderly, sick, and
handicapped. Use the flyer as your Tallking Points to make calls to the Governor and legislators; distribute the flyer to your congregation or organization.
Key to the mini version of the flyer above: #1 - $774 million in cuts to MediCal mean that people who lose their jobs and their health coverage will not receive essential health care. #2 - $187 million cut from child care will force children out of safe child care and jeopardize their parents' ability to work. #3 - $820.4 million cut from welfare makes it more difficult for working families to make ends meet. #4 - Cuts from In-Home Supportive Services means seniors will be denied essential needs for their survival and independence. #5 - Schools losing another $4.5 billion = children will slipping further into poverty and further away from educational opportunities. #6 - $200 cut from monthly SSP/SSI grants means that the disabled and the elderly will be hungry and homeless.
Call the Governor's office (916) 445-2841 - Let them know that people of faith and all those concerned about the poor require CHANGES in this budget. With people struggling as much as they are this year, it is too dangerous to push those already most at risk further down the economic ladder.
Many California Groups Give the Governor's Budget a Failing Grade California Partnership's chapters and members throughout California held actions and media conferences protesting the Governor's proposed budget cuts, and presented him with report cards showing that he is failing to protect children, elderly and disabled Californians.
In San Francisco, community members brought the Governor white carnations, each with the name of an individual who would be harmed by the proposed cuts. Vince Fits, a member of the Justice and Advocacy Team at St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco expressed the need for a new way of thinking about the California budget when he said, "We can find a way to do this. We can meet all the needs of the people." In Los Angeles, community leaders were first barred from entering the state building, but were eventually able to deliver their poster-sized report card to the Governor's office. "Despite California's terrible fiscal situation, the Governor is making some of the worst possible decisions," said Sydney Kamlager of Community Voices. "The cuts he's proposed need to be rejected and everyone needs to pitch in to increase revenues that will contribute to fixing the mess. Slashing services while need is on a steady rise in this economic climate adds insult to injury for those most in need of help." In addition to grassroots community groups, SEIU Local 99 and United Teachers Los Angeles came out and reinforced the message that the proposed cuts hurt all of us. LIFETIME San Diego groups were also able to deliver a report to the Governor, and LIFETIME held a spirited rally at the State Capitol in Sacramento where youth leaders as well as parents spoke out against the proposed cuts. Stay tuned for more actions! California Partnership will be holding coordinated actions on February 12th to keep the pressure on!
To learn what wil be happening: - Sign up for email alerts at: http://www.california-partnership.org/getinvolved.html - or Contact Alicia Lepe at 626-224-8189 alepe@communitychange.org - or Nancy Berlin at 213-385-8010 or nberlin@communitychange.org to find out more about these events.
The California Partnership, a project of the Center for Community Change, is a statewide coalition of community based organizations that fights against poverty in California. We work together for our common goals by organizing and advocating at the local, state and national levels for the programs and policies that reduce and end poverty.
The overall goals of the California Partnership are: 1) to win concrete gains in the lives of poor Californians; 2) to develop our collective political strength at the state level; 3) to strengthen organizations fighting crucial battles in their own communities; and 4) to strengthen California's role in the national debate around poverty issues.

Criminal Justice Reform - endorse the letter to Congress GBCS invites organizations to endorse this statement (not for individual signers)

Then Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.' Luke 19: 9-10 Currently, there are more than 2,300,000 people incarcerated in the United States prison system. The tough-on-crime policies of the 1980s and 90s that included trying juveniles as adults, eliminating parole, truth in sentencing, the privatization of building prisons, the expansion of mandatory minimum sentencing, three strikes laws and incarcerating low-level drug offenders rather than providing drug abuse treatment, have all led to an ever-increasing prison population. In several states, persons as young as 16 or 17 are treated as adults in the criminal justice system. While the juvenile system provides rehabilitative programs, youths in the adult system receive little of these programs. Youths are at greater risk of assault and victimization in the adult system, and cannot expunge their criminal records, which will dramatically limit their future opportunities in employment and education. Mandatory minimums have been instrumental in greatly increasing the prison population, and have contributed to racial injustices in the criminal justice system. One particular egregious form of mandatory minimum sentencing is the disparity between crack and powder cocaine. Both the U.S. Sentencing Commission and the Department of Justice have pointed out the failure of these laws to focus on drug kingpins. The overcrowding of prisons has led to corporate interest in building prisons. As prisons become more populated prisoners are then housed farther away from families and necessary networks and resources. Prison overcrowding has led to greater violence against prisoners, who are often without access to judicial recourse. Much more attention is needed for aiding prisoners who seek to acclimate to life on the outside once their time has been served. Each year around 650,000 people are released from prison, most with only enough money for a bus ticket. With little access to resources, a return to criminal behavior is more than likely. The UMC General Board of Church and Society invites Faith Organizations to add their endorsement to a Criminal Justice Reform Letter, to be sent to our government leaders. To read the text of the letter and add your organization's endorsement at the web address, click here. Back to TAKE ACTION Contents

Advocates for immigrants and immigration reform for the 21st Century will call for prayer vigils and in-district visits to members of congress in a call to prioritize immigration reform in the 111th congress in 2009.
The National Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Families is Feb. 13-22. Bill Mefford, GBCS director of Civil and Human Rights, said: "I encourage congregations to join with other churches, synagogues and mosques to pray together, and make this an opportunity to publicly state your support for immigrants and their families."
Just a few months ago Christian advocates of immigration reform believed that the political environment in the country would make it very difficult to make the legislative changes necessary to provide relief to out-of-status immigrants to the US. These changes to the law would be required to give even the most hard working and conscientiously law-abiding immigrants an opportunity to seek legal status. Some have said that significant progress can and will be made by Thanksgiving 2009.
Congress needs to know that there are people of faith who's faith calls for treatment of immigrants that is consistent with justice, truth and the fact that we are all made in the image of our creator and have value.
The National Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Families is sponsored by the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, a partnership of faith-based organizations committed to enacting fair and humane immigration reform that reflects our mandate to welcome the stranger and treat all human beings with dignity and respect.
Coalition members work together to advocate for just and equitable immigration policies, educate faith communities, and serve immigrant populations around the country. Through this coalition, hundreds of national and local faith-based organizations and faith leaders have called on Congress and the Administration to enact immigration reform consistent with these values. www.interfaithimmigration.org

At least 27 million human beings are currently enslaved worldwide.
Approximately 2 million women and girls worldwide are victims of the
growing trade in sex slaves. The CIA estimates that 50,000 women and
children are trafficked into the U.S. every year as forced laborers.
Some experts estimate that there are between 100,000 and 150,000 slaves
in the U.S. today.
Poverty is one major cause of slavery.
Suffering families, if desperate enough for food, will sometimes sell a
child into slavery. The most common form of slavery is debt bondage, in
which a human being becomes collateral against a loan; for example, a
child might be provided as collateral for a loan. Because of high
interest, family debts can be inherited, causing future generations to
be destined to slavery as well.

Feb 15 - Father Geoffrey Farrow Preaches at Hollywood United Methodist Church
Sunday, February 15Worship service at 11:00 amFollowing the service we will have a roundtable discussion with Fr. Geoff in Grant Hall.Hollywood United Methodist Church6817 Franklin AvenueHollywood, CA 90028 323-874-2104 www.hollywoodumc.org (See directions and parking info below)Hollywood United Methodist Church (HUMC) is pleased to have Father Geoffrey Farrow preaching in our pulpit on Sunday, February 15, 2009. His sermon is entitled "Transformational Prayer." Father Farrow has come into the public spotlight most recently when the Roman Catholic Church removed him from his parish and as a clergy member for his refusal to tell parishioners to vote yes on Prop 8. Reverend Kathy Cooper-Ledesma, senior pastor of HUMC says about Father Farrow: "His courageous actions to bring forth justice have inspired both our congregation and the community at large." From Fr. Geoff's biography On October 5th of 2008 Fr. Geoff delivered a statement at the end of the 11:00 am Mass at the Newman Center at California State University-Fresno. In this statement, Fr. Geoff explained that he could not comply with a directive from his bishop to direct parishioners to vote "yes" on Proposition 8. This Proposition would remove the right of same sex couples to enter into civil marriage in the state of California. Later that week, Fr. Geoff was removed as pastor of St. Paul's by his bishop and suspended as a priest. He worked throughout the month of October with the "No on Prop. 8" campaign. Currently Fr. Geoff is engaged in public speaking to advance the cause of LGBT rights. Commentaries by Fr. Geoff may be found at: www.fathergeoff.com Hollywood United Methodist Church is the 50th Reconciling Congregation in our denomination. All are welcome at HUMC; our congregation is comprised of passionate, progressive Christians celebrating the diversity of all people. More information about HUMC maybe found on our website: http://www.hollywoodumc.org. We offer childcare and ample onsite and offsite parking during the service on Sundays. Feb 25 - Film on DVD Pete Seeger:The Power of Song
Wednesday, February 257:00 pmDecker HallPilgrim Place660 Avery RoadClaremont, CA 91711Contact: Pat Patterson at (909) 626-3758ruthnpat@earthlink.net
Go to the map at mapquest: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Claremont&state=CA&address=660+Avery+RoadFilm includes includes Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Peter Yarrow, Mary Travers, Natalie Maines, Tom Paxton, Bruce Springsteen, The Dixie Chicks, N. Paul Stookey.A feature-length tribute to a man who has had much influence on generations of musicians, music lovers, social activists, and people for whom "doing nothing" about our world is not an option. The film, directed by Jim Brown, details Seeger's life and accomplishments through his music and through anecdotes from his contemporaries in the music scene, as well as those who followed him, including Peter Yarrow, Mary Travers, Guthrie, Raitt, Baez, Ronnie Gilbert (of the Weavers), The Dixie Chicks, and Bruce Springsteen. Seeger's family and friends, and the man himself, still singing at 85 years old, recall the rich history of the man, his music, and his social activism.Called by many the architect of the "folk revival," which catapulted American folk music from the back roads and hill country to the commercial success of the Top 40 radio, Seeger was viewed variously as a patriot and a traitor (depending upon who was doing the viewing).Blacklisted for 17 years (his triumphant return to television on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is included in the film) after refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) of Senator Joe McCarthy, Seeger retreated from the brink of real commercial stardom to spreading his love for folk music like a banjo-wielding Johnny Appleseed. Music is a powerful universal language, believes Seeger; it can unify all of the disparate elements that make up America, even the world, in common purpose.Neither blacklisting nor anything else has deterred Seeger from his tireless efforts to pursue social justice and world peace. From the labor and civil rights movements (he is credited with making "We Shall Overcome" an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement) to Viet Nam (from his stark and stunning "Where have all the Flowers Gone," to the powerful - and even now, timely - indictment of wrongheaded and arrogant foreign policy, "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," to his one-man stewarding of the Hudson River Cleanup, Seeger has always merged music with action. He became the embodiment of the musician-activist; his words and actions have often been as powerful as any political cartoon or op-ed in the New York Times. In the 1970s, Seeger began his tireless (and successful) battle to clean up the Hudson River with his sloop "The Clearwater." When everyone told him it was impossible, Seeger built the 70-foot sloop, and took schoolchildren aboard her to sing, to work the rigging, to experience the river. As promised to his own children, the river became, once again, clean and (even) swimmable. The DVD is a wonderful retrospective of Seeger's career, and an insightful documentary that examines the unity and power created by the simple melodies and harmonies of folk music. Feb thru March 12 - Exhibit: Immigrant Experience
Dec 6 - March 12 Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Exhibit is free.
The AFSC Friends Gallery American Friends Service Committee 634 S. Spring St., 3rd Floor Los Angeles, CA 90014 (213) 489-1900 http://www.afsc.org/losangeles/ht/d/EventDetails/i/70038/pid/1175
"Immigrant Experience" is an exhibit highlighting the spirituality that immigrants bring to their new landscape, symbolizing not only their connection to their cultures and inheritance, but also to what helps them live out their lives and sustains their spirit.
The artists' works are at once deeply personal and revealing of a shared struggle. They cover an array of styles-from watercolor to abstract expressionism to the bright pop culture world of Gilbert "Magu" Lujan, best known for the vibrant design of the Metro station at Hollywood and Vine.
This exhibit, the first to be displayed in the AFSC's Friends Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, also includes works by Barbara Lai Bennett, Chizuko Judy Sugita de Queiroz, Ofelia Esparza, Yuriko Etue, Pedro Rios, and Gumar Troncoso.
The exhibit will run until March 12, 2009, from 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. It will also be open during three of the public monthly art walks that take place in downtown, on the Thursdays of January 8, February 12, and March 12, from 5 PM - 8:30 PM.

A Reflection on Psalm 143 A prayer of deliverance for the persecuted immigrant by Mayuris Pimentel*
1 - Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness; answer me in your righteousness.
My
name is child of God, I seek only an opportunity to make a decent
living, only an opportunity to provide my family with enough food,
adequate shelter, and adequate clothes. At home the possibilities for
providing my family even this are very limited. I could often work all
week and still not have enough to provide for my family adequately. Is this just, O Lord? All I want is an opportunity.
My name is child of God, I seek only an opportunity to make a decent living.
So
I cross man-made borders in search of that opportunity. I travel across
rivers and deserts braving illness, dehydration, drowning, even death.
The names of places I travel to sound familiar to me. They are names in
my own tongue, places where my ancestors raised their families before
the land was taken from them by man-made borders. I
cross borders and then become invisible. I work two or three full-time
jobs for not even minimum wage, and barely have time to sleep from day
to day. Give
me rest, O Lord. Hear my supplications for just an opportunity. In your
faithfulness, let me know what else it is that I should do. Answer me
in your righteousness.

'Global Gag Rule Lifted by President Obama from the ACLU
In his first week in office, President Barack Obama took important action to restore quality reproductive health care for women around the world. President Obama rescinded the "Global Gag Rule," a federal policy supported by the Bush administration that cut off crucial federal funding for family planning services overseas.
The Global Gag Rule denies U.S. aid to foreign non-governmental organizations that use their own funding -- not funding given by the U.S. government -- to advocate for safe and legal abortion care, to perform legal abortions in their own countries, or to counsel and refer women for abortions.
"By lifting the Global Gag Rule, President Obama has given a clear signal that his administration understands the importance of ensuring access to the full range of reproductive health services," said Louise Melling, director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. "His action is important to the lives and health of women and their families throughout the world."

MFSA
lives our belief that to be faithful witnesses to the Gospel of
Jesus Christ is to be involved in the transformation of the social
order.
Founded in 1907, MFSA has been an unstoppable, prophetic movement for over 100 years, the oldest social justice organization in American Methodism.
In that time, just a few of the Federation's long list of actions and
achievements include: + providing unparalleled support throughout the
last century for the labor movement; + leading the struggle for United
Methodist divestment from South Africa; + supporting the ordination of women and the removal of all gender
discrimination in our church; + continuing to work for the elimination of racism and ethnic discrimination in the UMC;
+ spearheading landmark publications on the Far Right's influence in the church; + rallying United Methodists throughout the Connection to counter that
influence; + protecting vigilantly our church's support for reproductive choice; + championing the cause of full inclusion for LGBT
individuals in the life of the United Methodist Church; and + providing leadership for the UMC to take concrete action (such as selective divestment) for a just peace in Palestine and
Israel.
MFSA mobilizes all its resources to make a major impact every four
years at the denomination's General Conference and Jurisdictional
Conferences, the bodies that determine the future direction of the
United Methodist Church.
MFSA
works often through the ministries of the United Methodist Church,
supporting and augmenting peace and justice UMC ministries in the local church,
annual conferences, and at the national level.
However, MFSA is not an official UMC body - we are are not funded by the United Methodist Church. We are supported entirely by annual
memberships and the contributions of concerned faith activists.
Because we are an independent organization, we
can call our church to expand its understanding of the radical call of the
Gospel to be the inclusive, justice-seeking, risk-taking Body of
Christ.
We also take action
on issues and initiatives that are beyond the scope of the church's
ministries, providing an irreplaceable voice for our United Methodist
members in numerous ecumenical and interfaith coalitions and
campaigns.
MFSA
is accountable to its Board of Directors, composed of representatives
from our 38 active chapters, plus additional at-large members to ensure
diversity and breadth of expertise. + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
