greenpowerGreen Power Program turns ten

In the last ten years PSE customers have helped avoid the release of enough carbon dioxide emissions to provide the environmental benefits equivalent to removing 203,000 passenger vehicles from the road. How did they do it? By re-energizing with Green Power!

PSE's Green Power Program began ten years ago to support renewable energy production in our territory while also offering a voluntary way for our customers to reduce their personal carbon footprint. In that time, over 32,000 residents and businesses have signed up to match all or a portion of their electricity with power generated here in the West using sources such as biomass from independent producers like the Qualco Dairy Digester in Monroe. Qualco makes what is known as "cow power" which turns dairy farm waste, also known as biomass, into clean renewable energy using an anaerobic digester. The digester then burns the methane gas produced (the worst greenhouse gas) to create clean, renewable energy.

Qualco is only one of many organizations that have been supported by Green Power participants over the past 10 years. The Program and our participant's commitment to renewable energy means these energy innovators are able to plan and grow their businesses, secure funding and create jobs in their community. And we get cleaner air, water, and better protected salmon streams. All this for as little as $4 more per month!

Signing up is an easy step that makes a big difference; learn more about "cow power" and other clean, green Northwest energy at PSE.com/GreenPower.

Puget Sound Energy's Five Spring/Summer Cleaning Tips

to Help Customers save Money, Protect the Environment and Stay Safe

Now that summer has arrived, Puget Sound Energy wants to help customers save money on their electric bill, increase their recycling options and stay safe with a list of simple spring cleaning tips.

By focusing on new, energy-efficient technology and taking advantage of rebates and recycling programs, PSE's spring/summer cleaning tips have the potential to save customers hundreds of dollars annually on their electric bills.

    PSE's spring/summer cleaning tips include:

  1. Get rid of old bulbs: When long lasting CFL bulbs finally burn out, remember that CFL bulbs shouldn't be tossed in the garbage or regular household recycling bins. PSE offers free CFL recycling at participating business locations all over Western Washington. In addition to free CFL recycling, PSE now offers free incandescent bulb recycling too. Don't wait to make the switch, replace your inefficient incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified CFL and LED bulbs that use up to 80 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. There's no time like the present. Check PSE.com/BulbRecycling to find convenient locations.

  2. Host a bulb recycle box at your workplace: To make CFL and incandescent bulb recycling even easier for you and your coworkers, host a box at your workplace. Materials from CFL and incandescent bulbs including reusable glass, circuitry, aluminum and plastic can all be recycled and reused. Sign up to host a recycling box at PSE.com/BulbDrive.

  3. Dump that old fridge or freezer: Your old fridge or freezer could be costing you up to $200 a year on your energy bill. If your fridge or freezer is ready for retirement don't hurt your back trying to get rid of it yourself, sign up at PSE.com/Recycling to have PSE haul it away for free. PSE will pick it up and recycle it for free and give you $20.

  4. Try an LED bulb: CFL bulbs are energy efficient and long lasting, but they don't hold a candle to the latest LED technology. LED bulbs are even more efficient than CFL bulbs and can last up to 25 years. Replacing lights in hard to reach areas with long lasting LED bulbs means less time spent on a ladder changing burnt-out incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs can also be used in dimmable fixtures. PSE electric customers can receive up to a $10 rebate on ENERGY STAR qualified LED bulbs at participating retailers. Visit  PSE.com/LEDs to find a retailer who carries PSE rebated bulbs.

  5. Call 811 before you dig: If your springtime outdoor projects include building a new fence or deck, planting trees and shrubs or even pulling out a tree stump, please remember to contact the 811 Call Before You Dig hotline two business days prior to your project to help prevent serious injuries or potential hazards from striking or damaging underground utilities. All underground utilities must be marked before the start of digging. Don't assume you know what's below. Protect yourself and those around you - call 811 every time. It's free, and it's the law. Visit call811.com for more information.

solarGreen Power Solar Sweepstakes winners

You may have heard about our Solar Sweepstakes winners Lon and Susan Swan. Late last year they won solar panels for their home valued at $10,000, and they were up and running in late April. The Swans are long time Bellingham residents and their solar panels were installed and manufactured by two separate Bellingham companies - Itek Energy and Ecotech Energy systems.

April also marked the kick off of the Mercer Island Gets Green Challenge. For the challenge, the Green Power Program is partnering with Mercer Island community organizations to encourage residents and businesses to sign up for green power. Once achieving their goal, Mercer Island will earn a $25,000 grant to install solar panels at their community center. The panels will help power the center and become a destination for schools to learn more about renewable energy.

Solar is a viable option in the Pacific Northwest because our sunniest days are also the longest - which means extra day light during part of the year can generate enough electricity to make up for a lack of sun at other times. This is a big part of the reason the Green Power Program is always happy to help bring more solar to our local communities and why we buy solar power from independent generators in the West. You can see a list of other solar demonstration projects supported by PSE here. Learn more about ways you can get involved with green power at PSE.com/GreenPower, or like us on Facebook!
