Greetings!

Welcome to the first issue of Puget Sound Energy's Re-Energize Your Tool Belt - a collection of energy-saving tips and advice for you and your customers. We hope you find this quarterly e-newsletter informative, educational and beneficial to the success of your business.

Reducing energy demand through efficiency is much less expensive than increasing supply through new power plants. There are also environmental qualities, with huge potential to reduce carbon emissions. And, energy efficiency is a significant part of our "green economy." Our customers benefit from efficiency as well. They'll have greater comfort in their homes, lower utility costs and the satisfaction of knowing they're making good choices for our environment.

We appreciate your interest and support of PSE's energy-efficiency services. You are a direct conduit to our customer and together, we can increase awareness and, ultimately, change consumer behavior to embrace energy efficiency.

HomePrint: a new referral resource

Infrared scan
Last February, PSE launched its redesigned HomePrint™ program, working directly with independent HomePrint-certified specialists to perform energy evaluations of customer homes. PSE provides qualifying customers up to a $350 instant rebate to offset the cost of the evaluation.

HomePrint is an evaluation of the home's major energy systems, including space heating, air conditioning, water heating, insulation, lighting, appliances and home electronics. HomePrint specialists also install compact fluorescent light bulbs, pipe insulation and low-flow showerheads.

HomePrints include a comprehensive follow-up report of the entire home's energy usage, plus a prioritized list of recommendations. HomePrint customers are encouraged to use PSE's Contractor Referral Service to find contractors able to perform the energy-efficient upgrades recommended in their HomePrint report.

The PSE HomePrint team includes four quality assurance specialists who make sure HomePrint standards are being followed in the field so customers receive consistent service from all independent HomePrint-certified specialists.

Innovative town home project to be energy neutral

zHome
Energy efficiency has broken new ground, with the launch of zHome, the first multi-family net-zero energy town home development in the nation. PSE contributed technical expertise and funding for educational purposes to the project, which may become a model for how energy efficiency could change the way we live and benefit the environment.

Located in the Issaquah Highlands, zHome is designed to be energy neutral. Over the course of a year, the project is expected to produce as much energy as it uses, in part through technologies that will cut its energy use by two-thirds as compared to a conventionally-built town home. It will employ advanced energy efficiency measures, including extra thick double-wall construction, net-metered solar modules, water-conserving toilets and highly efficient heating systems and appliances.

On-site educational classes are available for contractors to learn about new technologies being utilized for this project.  For more information on zHome and these classes, visit z-home.org.

Employee spotlight: Malcolm McCulloch

Malcom McCulloch
Malcolm McCulloch is an energy-saving expert. As the Market Manager of PSE's Dealer Channel, Malcolm talks the talk and walks the walk.  As a Green Advantage Certified Practitioner and owner of a three star Built Green remodeled home, wherever energy is wasted; Malcolm knows how to save it.

Malcolm came to PSE's Energy Efficiency Services department in June 2008 to manage the multifamily new construction program. After launching this new program, which generated almost 1,300,000 kWh of electricity savings in 2009, Malcolm joined the Dealer Channel to focus on energy-efficiency incentive programs for existing single-family homeowners. Prior to the glitz and glam of utility life, Malcolm worked as the Sustainable Practices Manager for Bennett Homes, helping them to enhance their Built Green and ENERGY STAR Homes® practices to become a notable "green" production builder in the marketplace.

"It takes a diverse team to create successful efficiency programs that inspire the public to take action to save energy," says Malcolm. "We rely heavily on community partners like our local contractors to educate our shared customers about the benefits of energy efficiency, not only to increase their homes' value and lower utility bills, but to help them lower their carbon footprint as well."
