PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL DOCUMENTARY
BY STEPHANIE C. ROBERTS

Greetings!

Thank you for taking the time to follow me and my work. I hope you are surrounded by people who inspire you and encourage you to share your unique gifts.

A few months ago, I spent time with new friends in Nepal including Renu Shah Bagaria and her students attending Koseli School in Kathmandu while working on my Picture Hope project. Renu started the school several years ago to create hope for children she found living on the streets and in the slums of Kathmandu. Documenting just a sliver of time with these children and sharing their stories inspired me so much. I discovered great wealth in what most would consider extreme poverty.

While studying the images I made of these children in their homes, a thought came to mind. What if these children were given the opportunity to photograph and share their own stories with us? What if they were encouraged to teach us what it looks like to be courageous, resilient, and hopeful?

I'm planning to return to Nepal in 2011 to work with a handful of these children to find out the answers to these questions. I'm also thinking about ways to give you an opportunity to participate.
I'll keep you posted as my project plans take shape.

Let me know how you are and how I can support you.

Love and gratitude,
Stephanie Roberts

A Look at CARE's Focus on Mothers and Newborns in Nepal

MotherhoodWhile in Nepal, I shot on assignment for CARE to document their CRADLE Project focused on mothers and newborns in very poor and remote districts of the Far West region. Here, new mother, Jai Dhara, and baby attend Sahahara Mothers' Group monthly meeting high in the hills of Doti where they learn about prenatal and postnatal care and delivery support options, and share support for one another.

When Families Unite: Documenting the Webster & Tate Union

Father of the BridePhotographing significant experiences is an exciting challenge. Using my documentary approach, I captured the union of Sharon Webster and Clark Tate and their families in Apalachicola, Florida. My intent was to convey the true spirit of the experience. A way for the families to step into honest moments long after the celebration has passed. Here, the father anxiously awaits his bride.
