Greetings!
Happy August! I'm in the thick of summer in Turkey. Andy and I are here to be with my family, celebrate my brother's wedding, and explore a bit more of this fascinating, history-rich country. So far I've been in Istanbul, Izmir, Seljuk, Ankara, Cappadoccia, and Datca. And no exploration of mine is complete without the culinary component, especially somewhere like Turkey where we have such a rich and deliciously healthy Mediterranean cuisine.
I'm also practicing what I preach: taking time to be with friends and family, meeting new people, having great conversations, seeing new places, enjoying local, seasonal, organic fresh foods, soaking up some natural Vitamin D, enjoying the energy of big cities, and slowing down in small villages.
So I can't help but be inspired to write about Slowing Down for this month's feature article. I hope it inspires you to get slow.
I've been tasting so many amazing foods on this trip, much more than usual. This month's recipe is super simple and highlights the natural flavors of the oft-ignored herbs that, to me, help define summer. It's a refreshing Aegean Summer Herb Salad. Enjoy the refreshingly pure flavors of the herbs and ignore the urge to coat it with an unnecessary dressing. Afiyet olsun! I hope you enjoy your Byte. Woooo Hooooooo!!
There's so much going on even though I'm on vacation! That's my kind of work.
Learn more about the power of food as medicine! My radio interview on Energy Talk Radio is now available online. I shared with Alice, my dear friend and host, my story about healing from multiple autoimmune conditions and adrenal burnout (read: CHRONIC STRESS!) and the power of food as medicine. We laughted a lot, too. Learn more and listen to the show by clicking here.
You may want to forward this on to friends or family who are struggling with similar conditions.
And related to that...
My patient testimonial for the CPMC Health & Healing Clinic is now up on their home page, pictures and all. Check out the details by visiting my blog post here.
Become more aware about Invisible Illnesses! I recently volunteered as a blogger for the upcoming Invisible Illness Week, taking place September 14-20, 2009. You'll see more blog posts from me in the coming weeks about living with and healing from several invisible illnesses as I gear up to help promote this very important event and make good on my promise to share my story in more detail. Lest you think this doesn't apply to you, , know that more and more invisible illnesses (like the kind I woke up with one day) are manifesting in younger people - those of us in our 20s and 30s. I can also guarantee that at least one person very important to you struggles with an invisible illness. Read more here.

Slowing Down

Remember those summer days that seemed to last forever when you were a kid? When you'd forget to eat or had not a care in the world because you were having such a great time doing other things? When you're living your days with abandon and savoring each delicious detail, recreating this type of flow is easy. You'll feel and be healthier, more positive, and more resilient against the ups and downs of your life.

Aegean Summer Herb Salad
My baby brother is getting married in a few days as I write this. His fiancee is from the Aegean (Ege) Sea region of Turkey and a total delight. She's also a whiz in the kitchen. She and her lovely family introduced me to some regional dishes that are perfect for summer - cleansing, refreshing, easy, and delicious.
We had this salad with our typical Mediterranean breakfast: perfectly seasoned olives, fresh bread (corn bread for gluten-free me), ripe tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, home-made apricot jam, fresh figs, hard-boiled eggs, and tea.
This salad is my current favorite. I could have it every day if there weren't so many other flavors distracting me these days!

Client Testimonial
"Working with Simla gave me the tools to start listening to my body as well as the ability to understand what it needs. I immediately noticed the dramatic difference in my improved energy, mood, weight level, not to mention a renewed enjoyment and excitement for food.... By using the tools that I learned with Simla, I was greatly able to boost my immune system and was actually able to avoid getting sick and free of infection during the ordeal of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It could be luck, but I think everyone else I talked to was at least hospitalized once during their treatment. I beg to differ! [Simla is] extremely patient and caring; amazing level of listening and consideration for what I say. Incredibly knowledgeable on everything she teaches. Immensely passionate about food as healing. Very sincere and empathetic. A pleasure to work with!!!"
