Caching With Kids
There's nothing like being able to see the world with new eyes and a fresh perspective. You might say that caching is a pastime that is uniquely suited to those who appreciate finding the wonder in this world.
And if anyone loves finding wonder (and pretty much everything else) it's kids! Caching is a wonderful excuse to bundle up the family and do some old fashioned exploring.
Be sure that you are familiar with your GPS, have plenty of batteries and have at least looked online (geocaching.com) at the caches that you plan to seek. Don't let technology frustrations get in the way of having some fun. A little bit of preparedness before heading out can literally save the day.
Kids are naturally curious and love the hunt, especially if they can figure out clues and puzzles on their own or with a little help. Select an Earth cache and before they know it they'll even have learned something!
Keep your whole crew's interest and energy level in mind especially with younger children. Go for for mostly 1 & 2 difficulty and terrain level caches. We also recommend searching for small or regular sized caches since they are typically easier to find and have fun trade items. Having their own small trade items to exchange when they find caches makes the game more fun. Many families enjoy stocking a 'trade item' bag together before they head out on the hunt. This can be a good time to discuss 'sharing' toys and collections and also to clean the room!
For the tweens and teens, micros can be a great challenge, and even puzzle and multi caches to test out their algebra or other skills. And with all the proper preparedness, a family night cache adventure may have your entire family seeing caching and your town 'in a different light'.
We hope we've given you some good ideas to keep the adventure going for the whole family even as the weather turns to winter (in the northern hemisphere). Cache on!
