Haverford Township Day is October 6th
Join your friends, family and neighbors on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 at the 18th Annual Haverford Township Day. The theme of this year's celebration is "Getting Better With Age," in honor of the 100th anniversary of Haverford Township's incorporation in 1912.
The parade theme highlights the work of Township volunteers, community leaders and Township staff as well as many recent and ongoing initiatives, including:
* The beautiful indoor and outdoor community recreation facilities at Haverford Reserve
* Renovations to the Skatium
* Single stream recycling
* The roadway brine program (a winter weather program that reduces the Township's use of salt and will extend the life of our Township's highways),
* The Township-wide parks improvement plan
* Streetscaping on Manoa Road
* Oakmont Parking lot renovations.
Celebrated annually on the first Saturday in October, this year's Haverford Township Day promises to be the best ever, according to Assistant Township Manager Tim Denny, who helped organize the event along with a committee of volunteers. Haverford Township Day 2012 will feature a parade, vendors, and a host of other activities. The parade will begin at Manoa Shopping Center at 10:30 a.m. and travel down Eagle Road, turning onto Darby Road. The parade ends at the Skatium. Vendors and other activities officially begin at 10 a.m. All parade routes close at 10 a.m. During the parade, the only exit from Eagle Road (between the 7-11 and Grace Chapel, and between Grace Chapel and the Skatium) will be at West Marthart Avenue.
Come join us as we celebrate Haverford Township's past and look forward to even better days ahead. |
4th Ward Constituent Meeting
To Be Held on October 24th
My semi-annual Constituent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Quatrani Building adjacent to the Township Building at 2325 Darby Road in Havertown. This meeting is your opportunity to meet with me, the Township Manager, and other Township officials. These meetings provide a terrific opportunity for a dialogue directly between Township staff and residents, and also provide an opportunity to get answers to questions you might have. |
Flu Shots Clinic on October 1st
The Township Health Department will sponsor an Influenza Immunization Clinic for senior citizens and certain other adults on Monday, October 1, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Quatrani Building adjacent to the Township Building at 2325 Darby Road in Havertown. The Township receives the vaccine from the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, whose registered nurses will administer it.
If you have any questions about the program, click here to read the complete flyer, which outlines the criteria for eligibility. Interested residents should contact the Township as soon as possible because the number of vaccines is limited. The number to call is 610-446-1000, ext. 2204. |

Compost Update
I have received many questions about the Township's highly successful Composting and Yard Waste Program, both of which are continuing. Unfortunately, the Township has discontinued distributing free compost to residents because of the odor of the compost (experts were consulted, but they could not provide an acceptable solution.) As a result, the Township continues to collect yard waste and leaves, but the items collected are then taken away from the Township; thus, we cannot distribute the free compost, but still receive the benefits of the program.
The Composting and Yard Waste Program has made significant advances towards diverting yard waste from our traditional trash stream, saving the Township (and therefore taxpayers) more than $300,000 since 2009. The program is one of many efforts to make Haverford a "green" township. |

Human Relations Commission Update
The Township continues to accept applications for positions on the Haverford Township Human Relations Commission. The deadline for applying is September 28th. Candidates will be interviewed by the Board of Commissioners. Consistent with Pennsylvania state law, applicants may not be officers of a political party, i.e., members of the Commission may not be committee people or other political party officers. Click here for more information. |
Commissioners Approve Police Dogs
 The Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of two police dogs by a 5 to 4 vote at our September meeting.
I voted against purchasing the dogs because (1) the Township crime rate remains very low, (2) the Police Department has a superb record at solving crimes, thus I did not believe that the dogs were needed at this time, and (3) I was unhappy with the manner in which the funds for the canines were included in last year's budget, and felt that the Board should have delayed this vote until we had a full opportunity to address all of the concerns that were raised by my fellow Commissioners and me. Click here to view the video of the meeting. |
Visit the New Recreation Center
 The Community Recreation and Environment Center (CREC) opened to the public on Flag Day, June 14th, with festivities for the public. The building is beautiful and is designed to have something for everyone.
I urge you to visit the facility, which is located at the Haverford Reserve on Darby Road, to see for yourself.
