Township Prepares for Hurricane Irene

Hurricane

The Township has been making preparations for Hurricane Irene, which is expected to reach the area on Saturday, August 27th. If you are registered to receive phone alerts, then you have already heard from the Township. If you are not registered, please click here to get information about how to register for the Emergency Notification System.

Haverford Township has implemented a tiered emergency plan in the event Hurricane Irene causes any serious problems. Township Public Works crews are on standby to address any downed trees, road flooding or service issues. The Police Department has additional Officers on duty, and has activated an emergency command post at police headquarters. In addition, our EMS crews will have additional personnel on duty.

In the event that evacuations are needed, the Township Emergency Management Director has the authority to open schools to temporarily house evacuees, and the School District has buses available for transportation. Township fire companies are also prepared to handle any emergencies as needed.

This storm has the potential to cause extensive power outages; please be prepared to be without electricity. Please do not call the Township should you have a power outage. All issues related to power outages should be directed to PECO at 800-841-4141.

For Police & EMS emergencies, please dial 9-1-1.

Help yourself and family prepare by doing the following:

  • Make sure you have a battery-powered radio with fresh batteries and spare batteries.
  • Communications are your lifeline. Prepare by having a charged cell phone and use it sparingly.
  • Have a good quality LED flashlight with spare batteries (have a spare bulb if not LED)
  • Have a first-aid kit (in a water-tight container)
  • Use canned or packaged food that can be prepared without cooking or refrigeration.
  • Have several days' supply of drinking water (1 gallon per person per day) - cases of bottled water work well.
  • Have a full tank of gas in your car. (Store additional fuel in approved containers, outside - NOT in a house or vehicle).
  • Pack protective clothing, rainwear and bedding or sleeping bags, in water-tight containers or covers; trash bags work well.
  • Assemble an adequate supply of essential medicines; particularly prescriptions (in their original prescription bottle).
  • Have adequate cash on hand because ATMs may not work for several days because of outages. Carry credit cards and other forms of identification, and make sure they are in a safe place.
  • Locate ahead of time a place or places to take shelter if an evacuation is ordered. Have a map handy.
  • If an evacuation is ordered, leave.
  • Pets may not be allowed in shelters for health or space reasons. Contact the local humane society for information on animal shelters. Your veterinarian may also be a good resource for locating shelters.
  • Children and the elderly have additional needs. Put together whatever is necessary and make it portable.
  • Teach family members how and when to turn off natural gas, electricity and water. (Professionals will have to turn them back on.)
  • Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1, police or fire departments, and know which radio stations to tune to for emergency information.
  • Develop a plan in case family members are separated, along with a plan for reuniting.
  • Ask an out-of-state relative to serve as a family contact. After a hurricane, it often is easier to call long distance than locally. Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address and phone number of the contact person.
  • Watch television, listen to the radio or check the Internet for hurricane position, intensity and expected landfall.
  • Put important papers in waterproof containers (take them along upon evacuating); scanning documents, cards, identification to a protected thumb drive or disk and keep it safe.
  • Move all valuables to higher levels in the home. Basements that are usually dry may flood in hurricane conditions. Take steps to have items off of the floor.
Subdivision Proposed -- Planning Commission to Consider Proposal on September 8th

The Township has received a proposal to subdivide the property at Hermosa Lane and Golfview Road. The plans call for division of the property into five building lots, and the developer has indicated that the price of the houses will start in the $800,000 range. The plans do not include information beyond the engineered design, and do not specify when construction would start or how long it will take to complete construction.

Months ago, the developer had filed a sketch plan with the Planning Commission to try to get a "feel" for the proposed waiver of open space to permit a six lot subdivision. Neither the Planning Commission nor I was inclined to accept a donation to the Neighborhood Park and Recreation Fund, which is permissible, as an alternative to the Code-required obligation to set aside open space.

The plans are on file in the Township Building, and are available for inspection. The Planning Commission will review the proposal on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Quatrani Building adjacent to the Township Building.
