Commissioners Approve First Reading of Anti-Discrimination Ordinance
At the January 10, 2011, the Board of Commissioners accepted extensive public comment and then voted to approve the first reading of an ordinance that would ban discrimination in the Township based upon a person's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The Commissioners will further consider the ordinance at our February 7, 2011 work session, with a second/final vote expected to occur at the February 14, 2011 regular meeting. The ordinance, identical to the ordinance approved unanimously by the Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners, was approved by the Board by a 5-3-1 vote. Commissioners Oliva, Trumbull, Holmes, Wechsler and I voted in favor of the ordinance, Commissioners McGarrity, Connell and Heilmann voted against the ordinance, and Commissioner D'Emilio abstained. The meeting has been debated by the Board and the community since October 2010, and approximately 40 individuals spoke about the proposal at the January meeting.
