Commissioner Meeting Videos Online
I have begun a project of converting the videotapes of the Commissioner meetings and work sessions so that you may view them online (or download them). Just click here to go to the 2010 Commissioners meetings page and click on the "Video" link for the meeting you want to watch. We have converted the 2010 meetings, and will continue to do so for all future meetings.
Please be patient; many of the videos are quite large and may take a few minutes to load. This is another way I hope to keep 4th Ward residents fully informed about what is happening in their Township. |

Happy 4th of July!
America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact - the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality.

A Continuing Experiment:
My Second "Print" Newsletter Online
In order to save money (postage and printing), and to be as environmentally responsible as possible, this Newsletter (a smaller edition of which would normally be mailed to each 4th Ward resident) is being published online - and will not be mailed to every 4th Ward household.
Residents will receive a postcard advising them that they can opt to receive the newsletter electronically only by providing me with their email addresses (which will not be used for any other purpose).
For those residents without computer access, or who prefer a printed version, we will make copies available. But because I hope that most residents will be satisfied with this online version, it should save the Township (and taxpayers) thousands of dollars. |
Reminder: Yard Waste Pickup;
Also - Free Compost
Remember - the Township now offers a yard waste pickup on Wednesdays. To view the yard waste (and trash) pickup schedule, click here.
Haverford Township's composting and yard waste program has already saved Haverford Township taxpayers more than $150,000.00. Please do your part by placing your yard waste out for pickup on Wednesdays! Please note that grass clippings are not accepted with yard waste and must be included with your regular trash.
FREE COMPOST
Residents can pick up the material at the recycling yard or other designated locations, or pay a nominal delivery fee of $40.00 for up to a truck load of the material. The Township composting site is located at the end of Hilltop Road, off of Old West Chester Pike. Additional information and directions can be obtained by calling the Haverford Township Public Works Department at 610-446-1000, Extension 263. Click here to read about the composting program. |
Emergency Storm Repairs
The Township has been plagued by major snow and other storms. Last winter's epic snowfall has cost the Township more than $500,000.00 in unbudgeted expenses. In addition, the recent rain and hail storm caused major damage, with numerous trees and wires down. Public Works crews have worked to restore all services, and the Township is examining ways to pay for the expenses these storms have caused without further impact on taxpayers.
Hathaway Lane Bridge Reopens
Emergency repairs to the damaged Hathaway Lane Bridge have been completed, and the road is now open. Total cost for this project was $230,350.00. |
Darby & Marple Roads Construction;
Roadway Closed Until September 1
Reconstruction of the intersection of Marple Road and Darby Road has begun and will continue until September 1, 2010, just before school re-opens. The intersection will be closed during the project.
Being performed by contractors for the Haverford Reserve developers, in conjunction with PennDOT and the Township, the construction will reconfigure the roadway to a T-shaped intersection and will include the installation of a traffic signal. The contractor will be placing detour signs in advance of the road closure.

YMCA Update
There is tremendous interest among residents about the new Haverford Township YMCA, which will be a state-of-the-art facility that will serve families and individuals throughout the region. I plan to post as much information as is available on my website on its YMCA page. The YMCA is expected to provide detailed information to the Planning Commission shortly.
The Haverford Township YMCA will feature two swimming pools, a whirlpool, steam room and sauna. There will also be multi-purpose rooms and a Health and Wellness Center, which will include fitness equipment, a double gym, and an indoor track.
|
Recreation Center Update
The Board of Commissioners continues to oversee the Haverford Reserve Recreation Center, approving each stage of the project. Recently, we approved preliminary designs for the facility, and are awaiting more detailed plans that will allow the Township to obtain competitive construction bids.
The Board also approved a revision, which will allow the building to utilize geothermal rather than traditional energy. Geothermal energy is expected to save the Township (and taxpayers) more than $50,000.00 per year, allowing us to recoup its costs in a matter of years, saving significant amounts over the life of the building.
I continue to post information on the Haverford Reserve web page. Click here to see the architect's presentation and other information. |
Llanerch Quarry Reuse
Reuse of the Llanerch Quarry (on Township Line Road) was the subject of recent meetings of the Planning Commission and the Board of Commissioners. The Board has approved requested amendments to the Township Zoning Code, including reductions in the number of off-street parking spaces required for a shopping center, permitting construction of a free-standing fast food restaurant, and various other miscellaneous amendments. The Township expects development plans to be filed shortly, and will focus on ways to properly manage any additional traffic associated with a new development. |
Freedom Playground
Congratulations to Freedom Playground for securing major grants: $25,000.00 from the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and $15,000.00 from the Dana & Christopher Reeves Foundation, as well as several large donations from residents! The Touch-a-Truck fundraiser was also a great success, raising more than $10,000.00.
The project still needs to raise additional funds to pay for the poured-in-place surface, which is expected to be installed this fall. If you are interested in donating money or buying engraved picket fence posts, pavers and components, go to www.freedomplay.org. |
Support Your Local Civic Association
Haverford Township is blessed to have so many active civic associations. In the 4th Ward, which is one of the most residential sections of the Township, we have many active groups, including the Paddock Farms Civic Association (PFCA) and the Lynnewood Park Civic Association (LPCA).
Please click here to visit the PFCA website.
Get involved in your community. You'll be glad you did. |
