Constituent Town Meeting
Monday, April 26, 2010

On Monday, April 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., I will hold a 4th Ward Meeting to provide you with an opportunity to meet with Township Manager Lawrence Gentile, other Township officials, and me. The meeting will be held at the Quatrani Building behind the Township Building at 2325 Darby Road in Havertown.

The Town Meeting - which I hold twice a year - is designed to allow 4th Ward residents to air their questions and concerns, to receive answers to those questions, and to assure that there is an ongoing open dialogue between Township residents, Township officials, and your Commissioner. If you cannot attend, please send me an email (to dansiegel@4haverford.com) and I will answer or forward your email to the appropriate Township official for a response.

Help Build (& Support) Freedom Playground

Build Week Is April 20-25, 2010

Freedom Playground - at the Haverford Reserve - will be a state-of-the-art, custom-built play structure that will cater to children of all abilities and needs. Made wholly from composite lumber, it will give ALL children 100% accessibility to all areas of the play structure.

To be built over the course of one week with the help of as many as 1,500 community volunteers, Freedom Playground will be owned by the Township. Community volunteers will begin building the playground on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 8 a.m.

Your Help Is Needed

Please go to www.freedomplay.org and register for a shift that fits into your schedule. This is a great opportunity to help be a part of a great community venture.

The Freedom Playground Committee is still looking to fill a few key positions on the Build Week Staff - especially Captains, who serve as the "managers" of the build. Captains must be at least 18 years old, must be on the site for the entire six day build, but do not need any construction experience.

Whether you want to be a Captain, or just lend a hand, your help is appreciated. For more information, visit www.freedomplay.org or call the Volunteer Coordinator, Maria Pardini, at 610-960-6638 or email her at volunteer@freedomplay.org.

"Developments"

Haverford Reserve - Recreation Center

At our March meeting, the Board of Commissioners approved the next phase in the development of the Recreation Center at the Haverford Reserve. We authorized the architectural firm of Kimmel/Borgrette to prepare complete architectural and engineering plans so that we can obtain bids for the construction of the facility.

Bubble Gum Factory/YMCA Update

The Board of Commissioners has approved the final lease agreement with the YMCA, which plans to build a modern facility, including two swimming pools, at the former bubble gum factory site. If all goes according to schedule, the bubble gum factory will be demolished by December 2010.

I will keep you apprised of further developments.

Remember: Put Out Yard Waste Wednesdays

Haverford Township has initiated a Leaf and Yard Waste Recycling Program to comply with the new Pa. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) requirements. The Township began Yard Waste Curb Side Collection on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, and it will be collected each Wednesday, until October 27, 2010.

Yard Waste Collection Guidelines:

·Brush, leaves, and branches. Branches and brush must not be more than one-and-a-half inches in diameter, must be less than 3 feet long, and must be tied together.

·Bundle them securely with twine or rope. Do not use wire.

·All yard waste must be in brown biodegradable bags or trash cans that can be easily lifted (less than 40 pounds). Plastic bags cannot be used and WILL NOT be collected.

·Yard waste must be at your collection point by 6:30 a.m.

Unacceptable Material:

·Litter/Trash/Garbage
·Kitty Litter/Pet Manure
·Plastic bags and containers in excess of 40 lbs.
·Branches over 3 feet in length / Branches over 1-˝ inches in diameter.

Holiday Schedule:

If your collection day falls on or after a holiday, yard waste collection will be done the following week.

Why Yard Waste Composting?

Nearly two million tons of yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings and brush are produced in Pennsylvania each year. Until 1988, much of this yard waste went into Pennsylvania landfills. Then in 1988, the Pennsylvania Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101) became law. Act 101 set a goal of reducing Pennsylvania's municipal waste disposal by 25 percent by 1997. It also requires more than 400 communities to collect yard waste for composting and prohibits landfills from accepting truckloads of yard waste for disposal.

Yard waste can be easily composted to produce beneficial products such as soil conditioners or mulch. Yard waste composting is a sensible solid waste management alternative for Pennsylvania municipalities.
