Commissioners Approve Request for Proposals to Repair Skatium Ice
At our meeting on Monday, December 17, 2009, the Board of Commissioners approved a Motion authorizing the Township Engineer to compile specifications for construction and repairs to the ice rink's cooling system, which is leaking.
Responses to the Request for Proposals are expected to be available in February 2010, at which time the Commissioners will take further action on the issue. |
Televised Commissioner Meetings Delayed by Illness
Because of a sudden serious illness, the telecasting of the monthly Commissioners meeting has been delayed. Bob Gove, who oversees the televising of the meetings, has recently been hospitalized, and the Township is working to find someone to assist while Bob recuperates. Rest assured that the meetings will return to cable television.
Everyone at the Township wishes Bob a quick and complete recovery. |
Commissioners Approve 2010 Budget |
The Board of Commissioners, on December 14, 2009, approved the 2010 Township Budget. The proposed Operating Budget for 2010 totals approximately $66,000,000, does not require any layoffs, and will include additional Township services rather than the cuts in service originally proposed. Specifically, the Township will institute a once weekly (Wednesday) yard waste pickup during 2010, for leaves, clippings and other similar items. By having a separate yard waste pickup, we will eliminate taking those items to the County landfill (which charges us for dumping) and can instead compost the materials for use by residents.
Unfortunately, the Budget includes a 4.5 percent tax increase, or $44 for the median home assessed at $160,000, which is less than the increases approved by the County and most neighboring communities. I fought hard to eliminate any tax increases but, unfortunately, the following factors led to the increase:
-
1.8% ($48,000) increase in the Minimum Monthly Obligation (MMO) (pension contributions)
-
3.5% ($73,000) increase in the RHM Sewer expenses
-
4% ($906,000) wage increase for non-uniformed Township workers
-
4% ($295,000) wage increase for uniformed personnel (Police)
-
13% ($616,200) increase in medical benefits for Township employees
-
47% ($158,000) increase in the Delaware County Trash Disposal fee
Meanwhile, the Township still faces large reductions in key revenue items, and expects to see reduced revenues from realty transfer, mercantile and business privilege taxes. The trash disposal fee will also increase by $10 to $135; the fee remains lower than the trash fees charged by all of our neighboring communities; it costs the Township more than $200 per household to pick up trash.
Because the original budget proposed reducing trash collection to once per week, new trash collection calendars have not yet been prepared for 2010. I will circulate them in my Newsletter and on my website as soon as they are available. |

******************************************
Because of the demand for information about ways to recycle computers and other items, I have added a page to my website with links to a variety of websites that offer tips on where and how to recycle; I have included links to websites that will recycle some of these items, some for a fee, and some that will even pay you. Just click here for more information.
With everyone's cooperation, we can all do more to avoid adding more to our landfills. And remember, every item that we don't send to the landfill saves tax dollars. If you have additional information to add to my website, just send an email to dansiegel@4haverford.com. |
