Township Releases Proposed 2010 Budget
BudgetThe Township has released its 2010 budget. A summary of the budget appears on my website (click here to read about the 2010 budget); you can also click here to read the 2010 budget.

As your Commissioner, I fully understand the need to avoid tax increases, although the proposed budget includes a 3.5% tax increase, despite the following factors:
  • 1.8% ($48,000) increase in the Minimum Monthly Obligation (MMO) (pension contributions)
  • 3.5% ($73,000) increase in the RHM Sewer expenses
  • 4% ($906,000) wage increase for non-uniformed workers
  • 4% ($295,000) wage increase for uniformed personnel (Fraternal Order of Police)
  • 10% ($474,000) increase in medical benefits
  • 47% ($158,000) increase in the Delaware County Trash Disposal fee.
The budget also includes significant cuts, including:
  • Eliminating 12 part-time Public Works employees
  • Reducing sanitation collection to once per week (no change in recycling)
  • Reducing the police force by two officers (based on attrition)'
  • Elimination of other personnel, including a health department secretary, a police department janitor, and a part-time paramedic.

The Commissioners will discuss the budget at a Special Meeting on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room behind the Township Building. We welcome your input.

RecycleWhat to Do With Old TVs, PCs & Other Items

One of the most frequent questions I receive is what to do with those "non-recyclable" items that should not be thrown out with the trash - such as TVs, computers, etc. Although the Township offers bulk pickup, the best option is to dispose of these items, ranging from packing peanuts to computers, in a way that allows them to be recycled - or minimizes the need to add them to our landfills.
 Recycle
As a result of this demand for information, I have added a page to my website with links to a variety of websites that offer tips on where and how to recycle; in addition, I have included links to websites that will recycle some of these items, some for a fee, and some that will even pay you. Just click here for more information.

With everyone's cooperation, we can all do more to avoid adding more to our landfills. And remember, every item that we don't send to the landfill saves tax dollars. If you have additional information to add to my website, just send an email to dansiegel@4haverford.com.
