Billboards Update

On Thursday, June 4th, the Haverford Township Zoning Hearing Board held the second public hearing on the challenge by the Bartkowski Group (also known as "BIG") to the constitutionality of the Township's ordinance prohibiting construction of billboards, a ban that I wholeheartedly support.

The hearing was informative. Our solicitor, Jim Byrne, established, for example, that the proposed 14 X 48 foot billboard at Park's Car Wash on West Chester Pike would be 38 feet taller than the Park's car wash sign. In addition, residents and businesses testified about their opposition to the construction of billboards, explaining why these monstrosities would hurt our community.

Another hearing will be scheduled in July. I will notify you about the hearing as soon as the date is confirmed. You will also receive updates in my email newsletters, on my website, and in my print newsletters.

Commissioner Siegel Authors Anti-Soliciting Ordinance

On Monday, June 8th, the Commissioners will vote on major revisions to the Township's Soliciting and Peddling Ordinance. The revised ordinance, which was drafted by Commissioner Siegel, makes it unlawful and a public nuisance for any person, company, corporation or organization to enter upon the premises of a private residence or business at any time of the day or night for the purpose of conducting any form of soliciting or peddling where the owner or occupant of the residence or business has posted a "No Trespassing" sign, or a "No Soliciting" sign, or upon any property registered on the Township's newly-created "Do Not Solicit" list, which will be provided to the applicant with their license.

The ordinance, which must be approved by the Commissioners at our June and July meetings before going into effect, also limits the times when soliciting and peddling are permitted, and imposes fines and/or jail for violators. The goal of the ordinance is to protect the privacy of Township residents, while balancing the rights of individuals and businesses to conduct business in the Township.

A copy of the ordinance is available by clicking this link.
