YOU SHOULD MEET
Bob and Verdery Cunningham

cunninghamsBob & Verdery Cunningham: ordinary people who have done something extraordinary by making a planned gift to the Children's Home.

Like most of us, they enjoy spending time with their family, gardening, keeping fit and are active at their church, St. James UMC in Atlanta.
Verdery is also a long-time UMCH Board member and planted the daylily bed at the front of UMCH with lilies from her own garden. Establishing a small trust seemed a natural extension to the Cunninghams of the ministry they are already involved in at UMCH.

The Cunninghams believe that one of the best things about UMCH is that "each child receives individual, unconditional love." Verdery continues, "We feel assured that the money we give is going to help encourage and guide young people as they strive for a better life."

Bob and Verdery Cunningham are charter members of the 1871 Society at UMCH. If you are interested in making a planned gift to the Children's Home, or if you have already included UMCH in your estate plans, you too can join UMCH's legacy society. Contact Richard Puckett for more information. Be a part of the extraordinary.
"HOW TO" CORNER: ADOPTION TALK
Positive Words Lead to Positive Relationships

Many people have been touched by adoption in some way. Even if you haven't been directly involved with one, you know someone who has adopted or was adopted. Adoption can sometimes seem like a touchy issue and it be difficult to know what to say, so here are some positive ways to talk about adoption.

  • "Real Parent" is the parent who is raising the child. The term "birth parent" better describes the life-giving role.
  • A child "was adopted;" not "is adopted." Adoption is a single event and not a state of being.
  • "Put up for adoption" sounds as if you put a child up for sale like a winter coat. Birth parents are more involved in the future of their child than they used to be and they "make an adoption plan" for their child.
  • Remember that adoption can be a private matter for a family. Just as you would not ask a stranger how much they paid for their house or what their salary is, it's not always appropriate to ask questions about the cost to adopt their child or what the family knows about the birth parents.

Adoption is a wonderful way to build a family. Keeping conversations positive is a great way to help educate others about it's rewards.
