UMCH e-news September 2009
Greetings!

Our students have been back in school for almost a month and are already excelling in their activities. UMCH teens are playing in the band, cheering with the pep squad and playing on the volleyball team at Avondale High School. James B. is a starting linebacker for the varsity football team. And we extend a special congratulations to Desiah B. who was voted freshman class president!
Our youth are also excelling academically. 18 of our young adults are in higher education. These students attend 12 different colleges and universities, from Georgia Perimeter College to Florida A&M. One of our young women is entering graduate school this year at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. We are so proud of all of our students and are grateful to supporters like you who make their success possible.
Please remember to spread the word to your family and friends about the ministry of the Children's Home. What's the easiest way to do that? Click the "Forward email" link below.
Thank you again for all you do to change lives at the United Methodist Children's Home!

P.S. Remember to check our website for updates, and you can save a stamp by making your Work Day Offering donation there as well. Thanks!
CAMPUS UPDATE - EDWARDS GETS A FACELIFT
UMCH youth paints EdwardsUMCH staff and youth come together to give one ILP building a much-needed facelift
UMCH has 20 older youth in our Independent Living Program. Our ILP staff work with youth to help them make the transition from foster care or group care to independence.
ILP youth live in apartments on our campus while they work toward achieving their goals regarding education, employment and financial stability. Edwards is one of the buildings containing ILP apartments; up to eight young men can reside in this building. Oftentimes work groups from churches and the community spend the day cleaning and painting our buildings, but there wasn't a group scheduled that was going to be able to paint Edwards for a while. So our Minister of Religious Life, the Reverend Ellen Shepard, brought the campus together to give the young men a more hospitable place to live.
Rev. Shepard described the day: "It was a wonderful day - with a sweet spirit among everyone! We did a BIG job in just one day. Amazing work by all."
Many of our administrative staff enjoyed the chance to get out from behind their desks for a day and interact with our youth as they worked on a common goal. Nancy McConnell, UMCH's Director of Finance, shared her experience: "The youth had been learning about community service projects, and I felt it was a great way to show them that staff believed in and practiced the concept also. I really enjoyed working with the youth and seeing their determination, hard work and pride in what we accomplished. It was a fun day."

REMINDER - WORK A DAY FOR THE HOME!
Work Day 2009: We all have a story; help us write theirsUnited Methodists across north Georgia work a day for the Home
Every year United Methodists all over north Georgia give to our Work Day Offering - ensuring UMCH's ministry to children and families continues. We all have a story, and through the ministry of the Children's Home, children and families are writing new stories for themselves every day. They are stories of hope, of peace, of love and of healing. When you give to the Work Day Offering, you are helping write these kinds of stories for children and families in need.
If your church or group needs a speaker to tell the story of the Children's Home and the Work Day Offering, call 404.327.5854. If you'd like to show a short UMCH video, click here.
Anyone can "work a day for the Home" by giving one day's pay to the Work Day Offering. The Work Day Offering is September 20, but you can make a donation today to be a part of the new stories being written at UMCH!
THE "HOW TO" CORNER
Baby in car seatKeeping your children safe in the car
September 12-18 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages two to 14. One major reason for this is parents either not using or improperly using car seats.
Georgia's Child Passenger Safety Law requires children under the age of six to be in a child safety seat or booster seat appropriate for their height and weight and used according to the manufacturers' instructions. The law also requires children under six to ride in the rear seat. Children who are not yet one-year-old and 20 lbs. must ride in a rear-facing car seat. For more information, visit www.gahighwaysafety.org/childsafety.html.
Overwhelmed by the requirements and options? The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration suggests checking these four easy steps to protect your child in the car.
Remember, safety belts save lives, so buckle up your children, and buckle up yourself!
