Sophie and Lily

Lily and Sophia were adopted from NAHS in January 2001. Their family, the McClearys, report that even though Lily and Sophia are 14.5 years old, they are still going strong! Sophia does have a touch of arthritis but, with the help of their veterinarian and some great medication, she has the energy of a dog half her age! Thank you to the McClearys for taking such good and loving care of Lily and Sophia!

Birdie  Birdie was returned to NAHS in June 2009 after having been adopted in 2003 as a kitten. She spent time in the cat room and in the lobby, but she didn't really like the other cats and hid in a cabinet. In October 2010, after spending over 470 days at the shelter, one of the NAHS staff members took her home to give Birdie a break from shelter life. Birdie became a member of the Bucek family in March 2011 and they report she is a different cat, not hiding and even coming to terms with her furry sister, Porsche!

You Can Help Make The Black Cat Ball a Success
Black Cat Ball Thank you to everyone who has already purchased tickets for the upcoming Black Cat Ball. It promises to be a great evening of dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions, all to benefit the pets and programs of Naperville Area Humane Society.

We need your help! Please consider donating gift cards to use in our Gift Card Tree raffle. Gift cards from restaurants, stores and for services are always accepted and appreciated. We are also in need of bottles of wine for a new event, a wine ring toss, that will be part of the evening's festivities. You can bring your donations to the shelter during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day; just use the Service Entrance to enter the building. Donations need to be received by Friday, October 12.

The event takes place on Friday, October 19 at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased here. You can also invite nine of your friends and secure a table sponsorship at $1,400. You'll receive recognition in the program for this sponsorship.

There is still time to sign up and enjoy the benefits of sponsorship. Follow this link for more information.

Adoption fees during this promotion are:

Adult dogs, age 6 mos to 6 yrs-$100

Puppies, age 5 mos and younger-$150

Seniors, age 7 yrs and older-$50

Of course, we also have cats and kittens if felines are more to your liking.

All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, current on all vaccinations, microchipped and have a collar and ID tag. Dogs are heartworm tested and treated if needed. Cats are tested for feline leukemia/FIV.

To meet the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens currently in the shelter, please visit us during adoption hours which are:

Monday & Thursday: 5-8 PM

Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday: 1-6 PM

Saturday & Sunday: 12-4 PM

Visit our website for more adoption information and to see the dogs and cats looking for a family of their own. And remember, by adopting one pet, you are really saving two: the one you take home and the one now able to enter the shelter to find their new family.

2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar and Open House
Zoe
Zoe-available for adoption

Will you be crafting gifts for the upcoming holiday season? Perhaps you've been knitting a few scarves or painting some ornaments? Share your talents and help the pets of NAHS!

Simply donate 3 or 4 of your extra crafted items to the NAHS Holiday Bazaar and Open House. The items don't need to be holiday themed. Your donation will help raise funds for NAHS and help others with their holiday shopping! Send an email to Nancy Swantek, put "Holiday Bazaar" in the subject line and let her know what you plan to donate.

Then drop off your items at NAHS no later than Wednesday, November 28. Make sure your name is on your donation but, please, let us do the pricing.

The Holiday Bazaar and Open House will take place December 1 from 11 AM to 4 PM and December 2 from 12 to 3 PM.  Look for more details in the next Whiskers & Tails!

Help NAHS Care for More Dogs and Cats
Have you ever thought you'd like to have a dog or cat, but you know you can't make that lifetime commitment right now? Do you want to help NAHS but don't want to commit the time to caring for kittens and puppies? Consider becoming a foster family for an adult homeless pet!

Elsie

Foster families allow NAHS to care for more animals and one area where we need more help is finding families who are willing to open their home to an adult pet. These adults are either injured or sick animals and just need the peace and quiet of a loving foster home to recover more quickly or find the shelter environment overly stressful. NAHS also provides temporary care for the pets of domestic violence victims and other people who find themselves in crisis situations through our Safe Pets program; foster homes are needed for these pets as well.

Fostering an animal can be a very emotional experience, but the rewards of knowing that you made a difference in the that pet's life and helped NAHS save more animals is well worth the time and effort.

If you are interested in becoming a foster family or would like more information, please contact Becky at (630) 420-8989 ext. 113 or via email. Thank you for your help!
Opportunities to Help NAHS in the Community
NAHS has partnered with two local businesses to provide easy ways you can help raise funds for the dogs and cats!

On Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m., join other dog lovers in the annual "Ghost Tails" dog-walking ghost tour, presented by Historic Ghost Tours of Naperville. For $25 ($5 going to NAHS), enjoy a 2.5 hour tour of downtown Naperville and hear stories about the local ghosts! Click here for more details and to purchase tickets.

Welligee Personal Training & Lifestyle is offering fitness assessments for $5, a savings of $34 off the normal fee, with the $5 going to NAHS! They are also collecting items such as food, toys and treats for the pets. Welligee offers one-on-one and small group personal training with one of three highly-trained and certified instructors. For more information, visit their website or call (630) 904-0300 to set up your assessment.
