Gunpowder Gertie (Precious)

Gunpowder Gertie (formerly Precious) came to NAHS in May 2011 as part of a 12-cat transfer from another shelter. All the other cats soon found new homes but Gunpowder Gertie stayed at NAHS. The stress of shelter life caused her to stop eating and develop a respiratory infection so an experienced foster mom took her for four months until Gertie was well enough to re-enter the shelter. She remained at NAHS for an additional 9 months until the Deemer family visited NAHS - specifically to see Gunpowder Gertie! As you can see from the picture, Gertie has quickly adapted to her new home where the Deemers report she is chatty, much more active than she was in the shelter and loves to be around people! A big THANK YOU to the Deemers for taking a chance on Gunpowder Gertie and discovering what a wonderful cat she truly is!

Feline Frenzy Comes to NAHS
If you've been thinking about adopting an adult cat or kitten, NOW is the time! From August 30 through September 10, the adoption fees for felines are as follows:

Adult Cats, age 6 mos and older - $5

Kittens, age 5 mos and younger - $75

When you adopt a cat or kitten, you're really helping two pets: the one you take home and the one who can now enter the shelter to find a home of their own.

Of course, we also have dogs and puppies if canines are more to your liking.

Buckaroo

All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, current on all vaccinations, microchipped and have a collar and ID tag. Dogs are heartworm tested and treated if needed. Cats are tested for feline leukemia/FIV.

           Monday and Thursday: 5-8 PM

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 1-6 PM

Animal Advocacy 101

Join us for our next adult education seminar - Animal Advocacy 101: Be the Voice for Homeless Animals on Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 PM. You'll learn about animals welfare issues facing dogs and cats today including overpopulation, puppy mills and more. Our speaker is Allie Bender, founder, Students Helping Rescue Animals.

The seminar takes place at Naperville Area Humane Society, 1620 West Diehl Road in Naperville. Our seminars are free of charge but donations are always appreciated. The evening is educational only so we ask that you leave your pets at home. Because space is limited, please register by contacting Terri, humane education manager, at (630) 420-8989 ext. 117 or via email.

Enrichment Activities for Cats and Dogs
NAHS animal care staff have created a new enrichment activity program for the cats and dogs in our care. These activities help relieve stress in the animals, provide mental stimulation and reduce boredom.

In order to create these enrichment activities, staff use everyday items that can easily be donated to the shelter. Supplies include:
  • ice cream cones (plain, not waffle cones)
  • empty peanut butter jars
  • empty film canisters or prescription pill bottles
  • paper bags
  • catnip
  • 1.5" masking tape
  • fast-food drink trays
  • empty water bottles
  • paper towel and toilet paper rolls
  • soft and hard dog and cat treats
Items can be dropped off at the shelter through the Service Entrance as follows:
Monday and Thursday - 8 AM to 7:30 PM
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - 8 AM to 5:30 PM
Saturday and Sunday - 8 AM to 4:30 PM

Thank you for helping to enrich the lives of the cats and dogs who must call the shelter home!
