Foxie came to NAHS in early February 2011 as part of a transfer of 13 dogs from Oklahoma. She was just 8 months old and, while a little afraid at first, quickly adjusted, bringing smiles to the volunteers and staff who cared for her. She was soon adopted but, unfortunately, was returned less than two weeks later. Foxie waited patiently for the Nagles, who adopted her in March 2011. They report that Foxie, now named Ellie, has provided her family with lots of laughter and love in the last year and they don't know what they would do without her. Best wishes to Ellie and the Nagles on many happy years together!
*editor's note: last month, we incorrectly identified Fizzy's new family - the Millevilles. We apologize for the error.

Mayday Mayday Mayday!
 | | Mac-available for adoption |
Mayday is the emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal and is derived from the French words meaning "come help me." The call is always given three times in a row to prevent mistaking it for similar-sounding words.
Naperville Area Humane Society's May adoption promotion is "Mayday Mayday Mayday" and focuses on dogs and puppies in the shelter.
From May 1 through 14, the adoption fee for adult dogs 6 months and older is $100 and puppies younger than 6 months is $150.
All dogs available for adoption at NAHS are up-to-date on core vaccinations, spayed or neutered and microchipped. They are also tested for heartworm and treated if found to be positive as well as treated for fleas, ticks and worms.
You can view available dogs (and cats!) on our website.
Adoption counselors are always available to discuss each shelter animal's personalities and needs. No appointment is necessary to view the animals - just come in during adoption hours which are as follows:
Mondays and Thursdays: 5 - 8 p.m.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 1 - 6 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays: 12 - 4 p.m.
Mayday Mayday Mayday - come help the dogs at Naperville Area Humane Society!

Story Contest Deadline is May 1
 | | Blondie-available for adoption |
Entries for the "Breaking the Chain" story contest, one of the programs offered by NAHS to students during the school year, are being accepted through May 1. Open to students in grades 3-5, this creative writing project allows children to finish a story using their imagination to assist Duke, a lonely and scared chained dog. While imagining solutions, they are also learning the valuable lessons of empathy, kindness and compassion. These lessons are extremely important in today's world of bullying and school violence.
Each grade level winner of this contest will receive time with the staff at Naperville Area Humane Society, a NAHS t-shirt, get a behind-the-scenes tour, have lunch and enjoy fun with the shelter animals. The winning entries will also be posted on the NAHS website and a press release will go to local newspapers.
To read the story and get more information about the contest, click here. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, school name and grade along with your entry. Drawing a picture to accompany your story counts as extra credit. A winner for each grade level will be announced during Be Kind to Animals Week, May 6-12.
If you have any questions, please contact Terri at (630) 420-8989 x117 or via email.

NAHS Has Been "Adopted"
 | | Harley-available for adoption |
One of the programs offered to members of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce is Chamber Leads Groups or TEAMs. TEAM is an acronym for Together Everyone Achieves More! These leads groups provide a central meeting place for members to exchange leads with each other and help grow their businesses through referrals. TEAMs have the opportunity to "adopt" a non-profit and assist them throughout the year with various projects and activities. This year, the South TEAM selected Naperville Area Humane Society as its first non-profit with whom to partner.
NAHS is excited about this partnership and working with the members of the South TEAM. The following businesses are represented on the South TEAM: Appleman Criminal Defense LLC, United Home Loans, Rodan + Fields Dermatologists, Cowart Chiropractic Clinic, HIPP Temporary Solutions, United States Postal Service, Lydon Insurance Agency, Sparks Complete Car Care, MBR Stones, The Doepel Retirement Planning Group-Raymond James, Baird & Warner, Employee Synergy, Country Inn & Suites, Paint-Right Painting Inc., and Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.
NAHS hopes you will support these businesses who are helping NAHS!
