Live United - United Way
ECM Bulletin - October 19, 2011

Dear Campaign Managers,

Thank you so much for all your hard work thus far! We would like to extend an additional thank you for making our Commonwealth Society event a success. The Grandin theater hosted over 50 United Way supporters to watch Akeelah and the Bee and learn about the importance of education.

If you missed our final ECM Training last month, don't worry. The development team is here as a resource and we are available to do one-on-one trainings with you!

 Best Wishes,

The Development Team

Campaign Highlights

Carter Machinery ran a highly successful week-long campaign.  Employee Campaign Manager Lexi Dibbern scheduled meetings so that all employees in each Carter facility could listen to a beneficiary tell them how programs funded by their United Way donations changed his life.  The highlight of the week was a visit by the Homestead Creamery truck and free ice cream!  Carter's total reflected an amazing 35% increase over last year's total!

Roanoke Valley Students Join LIVE UNITED Movement!

Who says United Way is just for adults? Roanoke Valley youth are joining in the call to LIVE UNITED too... 35 juniors representing 9 area schools kicked off year two of their Student United Way experience by working on plans to implement United Way fundraising campaigns at their respective high schools this fall.  Student United Way is a two-year program designed to develop high school students into strong community leaders and citizens, exposing youth to opportunities to make a difference in their community by giving, advocating and volunteering.  During the 2010-2011 school year, students had the opportunity to better understand the needs in the community through agency visits and hands-on activities like the Reality Store; and discover how they could help make a difference in resolving these issues through volunteering.  Later this school year, students will use problem-solving skills to identify specific areas they wish to address and use a  simplified version of the community investment process  to award funding to quality programs addressing this particular issue.  SUW President Savannah Kramer (Hidden Valley High School) and Vice President Chris Bell (Glenvar High School) were voted by their peers to represent Student United Way on the United Way Board during the calendar year; then turning over the reins for a new set of youth officers in 2012.  Kerri Thornton (Carilion Clinic) and Juliette Myers (Glenvar Middle School) serve as the lead volunteers in this effort.
