Live United - United Way
ECM Bulletin - September 30, 2011

Dear Campaign Managers,

Thank you so much for all your hard work thus far! We would like to extend an additional thank you for making our Commonwealth Society event a success. The Grandin theater hosted over 50 United Way supporters to watch Akeelah and the Bee and learn about the importance of education.

If you missed our final ECM Training on September 22nd, don't worry. The development team is here as a resource and we are available to do one on one trainings with you!

 Best Wishes,

The Development Team

Campaign Highlights

Kroger Mid-Altantic

Kroger ran an energetic campaign, featuring a golf tournament, cookouts, inter-department competitions, special event fundraisers and more!  Their campaign team worked tirelessly to make sure that all employees had an opportunity to participate in the campaign.  As a result, they exceeded their already ambitious goal by almost $13,000, an 11% increase over last year's total!

First Citizens Bank

United We Stand was the theme for this year's First Citizens Bank campaign. Diane Dehaven, ECM, selected a theme that was not only fun but meaningful. They highlighted the connection we all have as Roanokers and the importance of caring about your family, neighbors, friends, and community continuously and not just in the face of an unfortunate circumstance. Those words ring very true for the culture within First Citizens as they are repeat award winners for outstanding campaign participation.

Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern's campaign, run by first-time campaign manager Carol Orndorff, was an excellent example of the use of best practices.  Carol and team delivered personalized pledge forms  accompanied by doughnuts or ice cream sandwiches. A United Way fair featured information about United Way from representatives and agencies, an appearance by the Greenvale School Choir, cornhole games, and prizes that were raffled.  Results are still rolling in, but the NS campaign is full of examples of how to get employees involved and keep it fun!

Community Impact News

Roanoke Valley Students Join LIVE UNITED Movement!

Who says United Way is just for adults? Roanoke Valley youth are joining in the call to LIVE UNITED too... 35 juniors representing 9 area schools kicked off year two of their Student United Way experience by working on plans to implement United Way fundraising campaigns at their respective high schools this fall.  Student United Way is a two-year program designed to develop high school students into strong community leaders and citizens, exposing youth to opportunities to make a difference in their community by giving, advocating and volunteering.  During the 2010-2011 school year, students had the opportunity to better understand the needs in the community through agency visits and hands-on activities like the Reality Store; and discover how they could help make a difference in resolving these issues through volunteering.  Later this school year, students will use problem-solving skills to identify specific areas they wish to address and use a  simplified version of the community investment process  to award funding to quality programs addressing this particular issue.  SUW President Savannah Kramer (Hidden Valley High School) and Vice President Chris Bell (Glenvar High School) were voted by their peers to represent Student United Way on the United Way Board during the calendar year; then turning over the reins for a new set of youth officers in 2012.  Kerri Thornton (Carilion Clinic) and Juliette Myers (Glenvar Middle School) serve as the lead volunteers in this effort.
