ECM Bulletin - August 22, 2011

Dear Campaign Managers,

It's official! The 2011 United Way of Roanoke Valley Campaign has kicked off.  Last night, United Way supporters and their families gathered in the Special Events Center of the Roanoke Civic Center for a night of food and fun, centered around our  new impact areas of Education, Income and Health.

The whole event was made possible by our generous sponsors: Kroger Mid-Atlantic, City of Roanoke, Advance Auto Parts, Dave's Moon Walks, Lee Hartman & Sons, Roanoke Civic Center, Ovations Catering, WDBJ7 Television, Q99, Les Cheveux, Carilion Clinic, LewisGale Regional Health System, Roanoke Valley Financial Fitness Coalition, and Smart Beginnings Greater Roanoke.  To  help get the crowd excited, the Westside Elementary School Step Team put on a heart-pounding step performance.  The step team, trained under Jeff May, consists of all Straight A and A-B honor roll students.

Thank you all for your support for the 2011 Campaign Kickoff. Now it's time to hit the pavement and advance the common good!

United Way Kicks Off Campaign to Advance the Common Good!

In June 2011, United Way of Roanoke Valley Board of Directors approved its new direction evolving our United Way into an even more relevant and effective force to improve lives and strengthen the Roanoke Valley. The process reaffirmed United Way's commitment to advancing the common good - creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in the Roanoke Valley by focusing on Education, Income and Health.

Advancing the common good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us. We are all connected and interdependent. We all win when a child succeeds in

school, when families are financially stable, when people are healthy That's why United Way's work is focused on the building blocks for a good life:

  • Education - Helping children and youth fulfill their potential through education
  • Income - Helping families and individuals become financially stable and independent
  • Health - Helping individuals be healthy productive members of the community

United Way remains committed to its mission of improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of people in our community. We will continue to make wise investments of resources to address the most important issues facing our community and provide accountability for gifts made by our donors. As a catalyst for change, United Way of Roanoke Valley will leverage financial resources being invested in these strategies by mobilizing the whole community to give, advocate and volunteer. It will take everyone in the community working together to create the brighter future we want for our children, individuals and families.

This new direction allows us to build on these traditional roles and assume a stronger role in convening and collaborating with other stakeholders to address root causes, not just the symptoms of problems as recommended by our donors and partners.
