Immediately Give Flu Antiviral to Sick High-Risk Patients, Says CDC
Officials urge expedient treatment in lieu of waiting for test results.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) representatives are encouraging physicians to promptly administer antivirals, such as Tamiflu, to severely ill patients with risk factors who are presenting with flu symptoms. Risk factors include diabetes, asthma, pregnancy and age under 2. Waiting for lab results is discouraged because rapid tests have a low accuracy rate and the nasal swabs are often incorrectly collected. Read more >>

Blood Pressure Meds Reduce CKD Risk for Patients with Diabetes
Antihypertensive drug therapy lowered kidney complications by 20% in study group.
For patients with diabetes, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor taken with a diuretic lowered the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by about 20 percent, even among patients without high blood pressure, according to research findings published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Kidney Disease Incidence Data Released a Year Early
Quarterly updates will include prevalence and patient counts.
The National Institutes of Health recently posted updated data for end-stage renal disease in the U.S. at the U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS) Web site, a full year ahead of schedule. USRDS will update the incidence, prevalence and patient count data each quarter. The U.S. has experienced a 20 to 25 percent growth in kidney disease over the past decade; releasing current data will expedite the investigation of emerging trends.
