Featured Project
Baltimore County Public Library,
Towson, MD
Our featured project this month focuses on the creative and enchanting entrance way of Towson Library in Baltimore, Maryland. The street entrance to the library and administrative building is now adorned with a 24 foot wide green dragon artfully painted on a circular concrete slab that welcomes children and patrons alike.
Hunt Valley Contractors worked with Sydney Hopkins, artist & designer to design and create this work of art. The space where the dragon now lives was previously a faux fish pond. The existing concrete slab was in need of preparation prior to commencing with the new design. This was done by first profiling the existing slab, then, using APF Cem-Rez overlay material in order to lay a clean canvas for the subsequent artwork.
Once Hunt Valley Contractors prepared the concrete and skimmed the curbs at the entranceway they created a stencil for the project from the design that was provided. For the painting of the dragon, APF's Color Fuse line of water-based concrete stains was chosen for its vivid array of colors, superior adhesion to properly profiled concrete and properties that make it ideal for outdoor use. These properties include its resistance to fading, vibrant and colorful tones and ecologically-friendly formulation. Finally the entire slab and surrounding area was sealed using Arizona Polymer's uniquely formulated, high abrasion resistant, water-based and ecologically-friendly Polyurethane 501. The project result is an impressive piece of artwork that also doubles as an educational motivator for children visiting the library. The dragon design includes two "walking activities" using illustrations to help children navigate through a maze, figure out puzzles, learn to count and look for patterns and different animals. Product Profile: Color Fuse
Learn about the beauty and benefits of Color Fuse
This month the spotlight is on APF Color Fuse. As you've seen from our featured project, you can achieve some impressive results with these water-based concrete stains. So what's so great about APF Color Fuse, and when is it the right product to use? For starters, Color Fuse has a leg up on the competition because of its exceptional epoxy-like adhesion to conventional concrete substrates. A novel and highly effective adhesion promoter has been incorporated into the formulation that gives this product the advantage. Additionally, Color Fuse has been formulated to achieve the variegated color tones of acid stain without the necessity of rinsing, neutralization, exposure to toxic acids and disposal problems. If you're working on a project with intricate artwork, Color Fuse allows for a high degree of creative expression. It is available in 18 vivid colors that can be blended or overlaid to create a wide variety of vibrant color hues. It can be applied to appear translucent when used sparingly or provide a more opaque look with multiple coats. Color Fuse can be used for indoor or outdoor applications unlike concrete dyes that can only be used indoors. For exterior applications, Color Fuse has excellent UV durability and the color will not fade. A UV absorber package is added to the clear finish coat to insure gloss retention. Application Methods:
- Brush for small detail areas
- Low pressure pump-up sprayer
- Airless sprayer
- HVLP
