Featured Project Church

Our featured project this month is the beautiful Christ Greenfield Lutheran Church.  Adobe Coatings was brought in by Concord General Contracting to produce the artfully applied flooring.  Originally the spec for this job required acid staining throughout the entire facility, however, the raised balconies posed a problem.  The concern was that acid stain would leach residue onto the floors below. The second challenge was that the project needed to be completed during a period of time that other contractors were working on the site.  This meant that most of the work needed to be done at night.

Adobe Coatings worked with Arizona Polymer Flooring to determine the best solution to overcome these two issues.  This led to the decision to use APF's line of Cem-Dye products in the areas with raised balconies.  The benefits of the dye were less mess and less clean up.  Working with Cem-Dye also allowed Adobe to stain and seal in one night with both coats of sealer done before people returned for work the next day.

Ultimately Adobe was able to create a very striking and attractive floor for this church project.  The following is a list of products that were used:

Cem-Dye Tawny 6800 sq ft
Acid Stain Buckskin 1700 sq ft
Acid Stain Cola 880 sq ft
Acid Stain Vintage Umber 700 sq ft
Acid Stain Walnut 500 sq ft
Poly 250 as the sealer using one coat
Poly 100 Gloss as the topcoat
60 Grit Aluminum Oxide was used for all exterior areas

Application Corner
In this application corner, we will review some tips and techniques for Cem-Dye application.

1. When applying Cem-Dye be sure to watch out for overspray so that it does not transfer to other substrates.
2. Solvent dyes are highly flammable so be sure to take the proper precautions.
3. You need to use a respirator with solvent dyes.
4. Make sure to clean up any drips,  spray marks or puddling material as these will cause molting.
5. When spraying dye, use a cone tip for the sprayer instead of a fan tip to give you a softer spray pattern.
6. For greater control, dyes may be applied with an HVLP sprayer or airbrush.
7.Be sure that the concrete is properly prepared (has enough profile) for your sealer to bond effectively.
8. Keep in mind that certain sealers can cause dyes to bleed.  It may be necessary to spray solvent based topcoats or use a water based topcoat..
9. You can blend colors and layer much easier with dyes than with acid stains.
10. Dyes can be used over an acid stain to fix problem areas or adjust colors.
11. If you do not like the color you can remove some of it with water or solvent.
