Making Spaces Newsletter
8th Edition  March 2009
Greetings!

Donna Ridgeway
Raise your hand (you don't really have to raise your hand) if you are weary of snow!  I like snow, but I decided last Sunday that I had officially had enough for one year!  Only 1 more day till Spring arrives and the weather in western Washington has not been cooperating with the calendar!

Of course as an Organizer spring brings to my mind a lot of great projects.  The onset of longer and warmer days, flowers blooming and the freshness of a new season just beg for a good cleaning and organizing.

Most people I know always have spring projects on their to do list.  A great place to  start is organizing your closets.  Read on for  some great space saving tips; then choose a closet and get to it!

Gotta run....I think I just saw a peek of sunshine!

Closet Organizing 101

Determine the function of the closet
(who uses it, is it for clothing, storage, or both?)

Take everything out of the closet

Make clear decisions about what will stay in this closet. Some items you may want to keep, but may not belong in this space - relocate them.  Have a box for each of the following:  Trash, recycle, donate and relocate.

Clothing:  If it has not been worn in the last year, you likely will not wear it again.  Donate!

Storage:  Store only the things in this closet that suit the defined purpose.  Does it belong here?  Who needs access to it?  Is there a better place for this item?

Now look at the closet - don't be afraid to make adjustments that will add space for you.

Can shelving be changed, added or removed to give you more space?

Can closet rods be moved, added or removed to accomodate your needs?

Most of us have more space than we realize; we just are not using it efficiently!

When hanging clothing, hang short items on one end of the rod, working short to long going across.  This will give you some storage space under the short items.

If possible, move out of season clothing to another closet or storage bins to increase space and make it easier to see what you currently have available to wear.

Use shoe racks.  There are hanging shoe racks and floor racks.  Keep your shoes organized and add space in your closet.

Use decorative boxes or storage bins on shelves to organize and contain accessories, scarves, hats, belts etc.

Avoid accumulation.  Practice the "one in - one out" rule.  When something new is brought in, be sure another item is taken out.
