February
2009
Greetings!

Donna RidgewayFebruary always seems to go by so quickly doesn't it?  Just a few days shorter than all the other months, it zips by and we are into spring before we know it.  Especially this year, I am ready to be done with winter and enjoy a steady dose of sunshine and warmer temperatures!  As I talk with clients, business associates, family and friends, there is much agreement that we are all ready for spring!

I am also hearing from them more of a desire and readiness to dive in and get organized.  For many who are concerned about the economy and reducing expenditures; that planned remodel or new furniture purchase isn't going to happen this year.  We need to find other ways to spruce up our homes, brighten up our spaces, and give them and ourselves a new and uplifted feeling.  Organizing can do that and then some.

As we go through the organizing process, purging eliminates the excess stuff that crowds our spaces and distracts from the beauty and function of a room.  Grouping helps us get a handle on how many of various items we have so we can plan proper storage.  Placing items with space efficiency in mind helps us make the best use of our space, and it facilitates high function and productivity in the area.

The benefits of organizing are less stress, more time, money saved, a calm and peaceful environment, and confidence you can find anything when you need it!

What's not to like about that?  I encourage you to choose one area or room and make a date with yourself to organize it.

Welcome spring with a newly organized space and see how wonderful it feels!

Donna

Making Decisions about our stuff

is not always easy.  Frequently our emotions take over. We cannot part with something, but then wind up putting it in the back of a closet or shove it under a bed.  It is not being honored as an important keepsake, nor is it being used to support our daily living.  Why are we keeping this item? The purge/decision making part of organizing is often the most time consuming and difficult step of organizing.

Our goal is to make clear, informed and intentional decisions about what we need to keep.

Ask yourself these questions to help you in your decision making process:

Have I used this in the last 12 months?
(If no - why am I keeping it?)

Do I love it?

Do I need it?
(If no to the prior 2 questions - must discard)

Does it support the purpose/function of this space?
(If no - discard or relocate)

Does it support my daily living?
(If no -  discard or relocate)

Is it an antique, heirloom or family treasure?

If I keep it - where will I keep it?  Will that honor it's prsence in my home and my life?

Why do I need to keep it?

Where is the best place for it?
