April 2012
Greetings!

With Earth Day right around the corner on April 22nd we would like to encourage you to take a look around and see what you can do for the planet today. Why not celebrate Earth Day all month long? Perhaps you could reduce the length of time you spend in the shower, pick-up a piece of trash you see on the road or plant a seed and watch it grow. There are so many ways we could all be doing more for our environment and in turn making our world a better place to live for our children and grandchildren.

There will be activities and festivals taking place all over Los Angeles on April 22nd, so be sure to check L.A. Inc's Earth Day calendar of events and get involved!

Linking Filmmakers from Around the World
Professor Jeremy Kagan at the University of Southern California
School of Cinematic Arts meets with the delegation to discuss documentaries as a tool to inspire action.

Film school professors, film festival directors and film critics from 13 countries came together for a three-week project to expose them to the diversity of filmmaking in the United States. Collectively they were interested in exploring the role of film in social and political change and building connections with industry professionals that will help strengthen their work in their home countries. Many of them have a strong interest in topics such as human rights, women's issues and race/ethnicity/class divide. With a diverse group of countries represented they were able to share their experiences as creative film leaders with each other as well as with Los Angeles industry leaders.

We would like to thank the L.A. Film School, Jeremy Kagan at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Muslims on Screen and Television (MOST), the Sundance Institute, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for sharing their field of expertise with this delegation.

As a social component to their program, the group also had the opportunity to meet Angelinos for dinner and conversation. We would like to thank IVCLA Citizen Diplomats Wendy Arnold, Ginger & John Barnard, Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Beigel, Juanita Hamilton, Michael Harrison and James & Sandra Kohn for extending their warm hospitality to these international visitors.

Board V.P. Recognized for Leadership in Trade
A ceremony was held last month to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first customs filing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which was filed by Guy Fox. During his remarks he remembered rising at the crack of dawn in order to submit the first customs filing at LAX. Fox was recognized for his "tireless dedication over the past 50 years to building bridges through trade and selfless volunteer contributions."

The ceremony was held at LAX's Flight Path Museum and Learning Center and recognized Fox and LAX's close relationship with U.S. Customs and Border Protection during the past half century. Those attending included  Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners Vice President Valeria Velasco and Todd Owen, Director of Field Operations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A commendation was also presented to Fox from the Los Angeles City Council citing him for his achievements

Fox is Vice President of the IVCLA board of directors and Chairman of the District Export Council of Southern California, a national appointment. IVCLA's Board President Hud Warren was also recently appointed to the District Export Council of Southern California. IVCLA is proud to be actively connected with the international trade community in Los Angeles.
