Greetings!
Summer came and went in a blink of an eye. As the rain starts falling on our rooftops, I am reminded of the severe droughts occurring in the Horn of Africa. Aid agencies are calling it the worst drought in 60 years. The food security situation is dire and continues to threaten the lives of millions of people across the region. IVCLA works with emerging leaders from around the world to resolve the water shortage crisis' and develop new strategies for preventing such disasters in the future. We hope you will strongly consider reducing your water usage to help save one of our most precious natural resources. It has never before been so important to work together as a global community.
If you are working locally on environmental issues and would be interested in meeting with international delegations to discuss green technologies, environmental sustainability or water security please contact Kim Le at (213) 388-1428 x.22.
Sincerely,
Helen Thomas

Uniting the World through Star Gazing
By Reshama Damle, IVCLA Intern
Dr. Priya Shah, an Indian astrophysicist focusing on star clusters, their formation, dynamics and evolution, visited the Los Angeles area as a participant in the International Visitor Leadership Program last month. Dr. Shah is passionate about promoting astronomy education to the youth in India through workshops and night-show observations. She is a positive role model for her female students, promoting their equal role in science and technology. Her recent visit to Los Angeles not only expounded on her interest in stellar research, it allowed the opportunity to speak with specialists in experiential learning education specifically in astronomy. While in Los Angeles, Dr. Shah met with astronomers at the Historic Mount Wilson Observatory and the Griffith Observatory as well as scientists with Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. While at the Griffith Observatory, she learned about astronomy educational programs geared toward 5th and 8th graders in Southern California. As part of her visit she attended a youth science presentation on comet mass formation. The opportunity to share ideas and observe a well planned program inspired further conversation with the director of the Griffith Observatory. The experience encourages creativity and motivation to design better educational programs using unconventional teaching methodologies in India. Dr. Shah's visit to these centers of astronomy science represents a larger purpose and value to international exchange. Her presence and participation alone promotes information sharing, camaraderie and openness in the international scientific education community. Without the opportunities to observe and share experiences with professional colleagues, international friendships cannot form. IVCLA is pleased to be a part of bridging the gap to further understanding and communication of like minds. |
22nd Annual Fulbright Luncheon IVCLA's Annual Fulbright Luncheon was held last weekend at the beautiful Malibu home of Dr. & Mrs. Amarjit Marwah. IVCLA members and their families came to welcome over one hundred international Fulbright scholarship students studying in Southern California. As always, it is a wonderful event that gives these students an opportunity to meet Americans socially and it gives Angelenos the chance to meet people from all corners of the world. We are very grateful to the Marwahs for continuing to host this luncheon year after year. It has truly become an IVCLA tradition.
