Welcome
Our staff wishes you and yours a healthy, wealthy, and eco-conscious 2009. We're quite excited about having a new gathering spot on LBI. Read more about it below. This month we're focusing on the 2009 science initiatives at the LBIF. We hope you enjoy reading about all the things we're up to and that you'll consider getting involved too.
Bay-Friendly News
Friday, December 13th, the second annual Colloquium of Bay-related organizations met again at LBIF. Let by Rutgers, twenty groups heard an update on the State of the Bay and discussed current projects. Once again, several partnering opportunities were identified for our own science projects.

LBIF announces the opening of the Arts Cafe at LBIF. Each week, prior to Science Saturday, join your friends and neighbors for coffee, tea, desserts and other treats. Our menu is provided by Foodies! Come hang out with your friends or bring your PC and tap into the WiFi.  We'll be open from noon to 3pm.

Science Saturdays start on Feb 7. Once again we'll be hosting our popular series from February through April. This year we have two themes for our programs: Living Green and Nature Around Us. All programs start at 1:30. Following is the first part of our lineup.

Feb 7:  Make A Clean Start in 2009
In this interactive program, you'll learn how simple-to-do solutions can help you save money, make your home sparkle, and your garden grow. Learn how to make and use Bay-Friendly household cleaning products and home gardening products. Bring a few spray bottles to take home your samples.

Feb 14: Technology Tools for Sustainable Development
How do we ensure a pristine environment for the next generation? Sustainable development is the answer. But how do we insure we're getting there? John Kostopolous, our technology expert, will help us all understand how we can utilize new technology tools for sustainable development. Many tools can help us. Come learn about the computer and communications tools YOU can use to participate. Saturday also celebrates Valentine's Day today as part of LBI's Chocolate Week: chocolate turtles for our attendees!

Feb 21: Is an Electric Vehicle in Your Future?
Ever wonder if you could use an electric car? See how electric vehicles could change your carbon footprint and your life. South Jersey  Electric Vehicles, LLC shows off one of their units and profiles their line of passenger and utility vehicles. You'll also learn about the newly produced Tesla, a high-end electric-powered sports car.

Feb 28:  What's Up with Jacques Cousteau?
Find out about New Jersey's Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Reserve, their ongoing projects and fun activities that you and your family can enjoy. Education Coordinator Melanie Reding will tell us what's up. It's all part of Nature Around Us!

Mar 7: Really Innovative Energy Management
Rick Dovey, President of Atlantic County Utility Authority, will tell us about the many ways in which ACUA is on the cutting edge of energy management and conservation.  Rick's most notable project is NJ's first windfarm in Atlantic City. Other green projects include a solar generation facility, landfill gas to electric facility, biodiesel, hybrid vehicles, the sustainability program and energy conservation. If you want to know how innovation can be put to work in your own backyard, this program is a must for you.

Mar 14: Satellites, Robots and our Ocean
Josh Kohut from Rutgers Oceanography Department shows us how new technologies are changing the way we understand the ocean. Using satellites, networks of radio transmitters and even underwater robots, scientists are exploring and mapping the ocean in new ways. Learn how these technologies are being used along the New Jersey coast.

Understanding the Challenges
We have an ambitious schedule of demonstration science projects planned in 2009. To accomplish them, we'll need volunteers, sponsors, and the support of our neighbors. Take a look below and see how YOU can help.

School Outreach
Robbie Holzwarth, of Robbie's Loveladies Marina, Doreen Greenberg and Angela Anderson are creating a program to teach lessons from the Island Blue Pages to local schools. If you'd like to help out, let us know.

Island Blue Pages Newsletter
We're in our fourth month. We need input from other organizations about programs and events about our Bay and environment. Send your information to
John Petralia

Island Blue Pages Reprint

Our stock of books is completely gone. LBIF, ReClam the Bay and the School Outreach initiative are going to need copies of the Island Blue Pages. Cost to reprint another 5000 copies is $9500. If your organization can help out, contact us at islandbluepages@lbifoundation.org.

Interactive Island Blue Pages

John Kostopoulos will create an interactive version of the Island Blue Pages in digital format. Targeted at children, the CD will contain quizzes, puzzles and graphics to help teach youngsters lessons from the Island Blue Pages. The CD will be for sale this summer.

Stories by the Sea
Working with Alliance for a Living Ocean, we plan to have older LBI youth become "Stories by the Sea" performers. Rick Bushnell is working with the staffs of LBIF and ALO to develop specifics. We need volunteers both young and old for this one.

Alternative Energy Projects
The committee has secured funding for an alternative energy demonstration at the LBIF. Our two engineers, Burt Nemroff and Bill Brinkman, along with John Petralia are developing specifications in keeping with Long Beach Township requirements.

Rain Garden
Sandy Anton and Barb Peda will be the project managers for the implementation of our new demonstration garden. This will include design, funding and installation targeted for completion in July 2009. We will be applying for  grants and seeking funds from neighbors and partners. If you'd like to lend a hand, or a shovel, contact us at islandbluepages@lbifoundation.org.

Barnegat Bay Day
Our third annual family fun day will be held July 8th. We'll need lots of hands to make it all happen. if you would like to help out before or during the event, or if your organization would like to participate, please send us an email at
islandbluepages@lbifoundation.org.
