Success builds upon success and the Evergreen Community is moving in that positive direction with several notable "wins" this summer for our residents. The announcement of a new grocery store coming to Evergreen Village Square, continuing partnerships with non-profit and new for-profit organizations who are donating funds to help keep the Lake Cunningham Regional Skate park open and staffed, and finally continuing the tradition of Music and Movie nights at the Evergreen Village Square, have all contributed to building stronger community relationships.

Auto Repair Assistance Program

 

The City of San Jos� is currently funding an Auto Repair Assistance Program (ARAP) administered by EHC LifeBuilders. This program provides financial assistance for auto repairs for low-income households who need their vehicle to get them to and from employment and/or employment related activities.

Bright Green San Jos� has gone Social

 

It's no secret that social media has changed the way we communicate in our day-to-day lives. The City's Environmental Services Department has established a really cool and fun Facebook page with environmental related tips, special announcements, event photos and videos, prize promotions and more. They want to hear from you! Visit them on Bright Green San Jos� and share your stories about how you help the environment, tips and tricks, start a discussion and become a fan and "like" Bright Green San Jos�'s Facebook page! 

 

work2future Green Cadre Youth Training Program

 

Applications are being accepted for 50 available positions and enrollment begins in August. This is a free and exciting opportunity for youth to: earn a stipend, build resume, participate in internships, receive a free bus pass, earn certifications and receive training and workshops at no cost.

Grow Your Own Vegetables and Support a Good Cause

 

Valley Verde, a non-profit organization, sells raised bed vegetable garden installation and maintenance services as well as "do-it-yourself" kits to anyone who would like to start a personal vegetable garden. All proceeds are used to provide low income families with gardening and nutrition classes and raised bed vegetable gardens free of charge. Valley Verde aims to improve the wellness of thousands of families in Santa Clara County by teaching them to grow vegetables. Valley Verde provides a free monthly newsletter with planting tips, harvest information and recipes to make your garden a success. Summer is the prime planting season for the autumn and winter harvest. New Free Public Charter High School in the Mayfair Area

 

Ace Charter school is now accepting applications for 9th grade. This college-prep high school will provide daily tutoring by college students, work closely with families to support student learning and be dedicated to helping your child until they graduate from college.

Symphony Silicon Valley's 2012 Free Outdoor Summer Music Festival

Now - August 5th

On the Green at San Jose State University, San Carlos at 4th Street

 

Sponsored by Target, Applied Materials, City of San Jos� and KCBS Radio, the Symphony's 5th annual Target Summer Pops festival brings free professional orchestral music to the community in delightful fully produced lawn concerts on the green at San Jose State University. The festival has quickly become a beloved family tradition, with last year's festival drawing over 16,000 people and giving out 192 gallons of free ice cream!

Join Kaiser Permanente employees, physicians, members, and families on a series of guided hikes where we'll experience some wonderful Santa Clara County Park trails together.

Come and honor the WWII Generation and step back in time to 1945 on the beautiful grounds of History Park

Dance under the lights of History Park's historic light tower as we honor the 222nd Anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard with special tribute to Ernest Borgnine!

 

Spirit of '45 Unsung Heroes Film Festival, August 6th - 10th 7:00 p.m. ($2 admission)

At the Mexican Heritage Plaza a different film will be shown about traditionally underrepresented groups who served during WWII, breaking many stereotypes.


Spirit of '45 Day at San Jose Giants Stadium, August 12th, 7:00 p.m.

Join us as we celebrate San Jose Municipal Stadium's 70th anniversary.

 

Spirit of '45 is a non-profit organization which honors the WWII Generation annually with a day of remembrance and commemoration of the end of WWII.

Music and Movie Nights at Evergreen Village Square

Councilmember Rose Herrera, Involved Evergreen and Shapell Industries invite you to enjoy great live music and treat yourself to fine food while supporting local businesses at the Square sharing an evening under the stars with your friends, family and neighbors. 

 

Movie Night will take place after the concert in the Square from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. closer to dusk. Don't forget to bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

Kamali'i O Ke Kai Outrigger Canoe Club Community Appreciation Day

Saturday, August 11th, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Lake Cunningham Regional Park, 2303 S. White Road

 

Join Kamali'i O Ke Kai Outrigger Canoe Club at its annual Community Appreciation Day at the Lake Cunningham Marina. It is open to the public to paddle, meet the outrigger canoe club members and learn more about their unique organization and their competitive sport and tradition.

 

Throughout the day you will have the opportunity to participate as an active paddler during which time you will be in an outrigger canoe and be able to paddle around Lake Cunningham with the help and guidance of Kamali'i O Ke Kai. Come on over and enjoy a nice summer day at the lake with the club! Everyone is welcome, children and adults of all ages!

 

There will be a canned food drive in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank. Please help and contribute.

The San Jos� Housing Department, along with its partners, will be hosting HUD educational homebuyer classes where potential first time buyers can learn the basics of the home purchasing process. Pre-registration is a requirement to attend and all attendees are required to pay a $30 non-refundable registration fee.

Starlight Cinemas - Free Summer Outdoor Movies

Now through August, a traveling cinema series will continue its yearly tradition of showing movies in four distinct downtown neighborhoods throughout the summer. Take advantage of San Jos�'s warm, summer nights and enjoy a movie under the star-studded sky at Starlight Cinemas, brought to you by the San Jos� Downtown Association.

 

Pre-show entertainment begins at 7:00 p.m. and movies begin at dusk. Don't forget to bring your own chair or blanket as well as some snacks - or an entire meal from a nearby downtown restaurant!
