March 2012 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

Fostering an appreciation for our culturally diverse community is an important part of community building in Evergreen. Celebrating our differences, while at the same time coming together as a whole community united in common values, is quintessentially American. I was treated to an amazing demonstration of community celebrating diversity at Carolyn Clark's annual Rhythm Nation on February 16th. This event was inspired by a creative teacher, Bernadette Marcias, as a way of facilitating students' exploration of the performing arts. Through music and dance the students shared their cultural pride and what makes their culture special with the community. Encouraging this kind of exchange is a very important value for me personally and I believe essential in a country that has been built on welcoming immigrants from all over the world.
