September 2011 Newsletter

Dear Neighbors,

Public-private partnerships are thriving in Evergreen. Working together, local government, small businesses and community organizations can support worthy causes, grow the economy and build community.

Over the past three summers, Evergreen Village Square has become a favorite destination for Friday night Music and Movie Nights. Shapell Homes provides the music and Involved Evergreen, the City of San José, and District 8 Community Round Table provide the movies and volunteers who set up and take down the movie equipment. The momentum has been building with many people returning year after year. Throughout this past summer these events brought families together to meet friends and neighbors, supported the local small businesses in the square and provided the community an opportunity to support donation drives for local non-profits.

Hundreds of neighbors came to the square on Friday nights to enjoy the music, food and movies and to drop their donations of school supplies and canned foods to the Family Giving Tree Back to School Supply Drive and the Second Harvest Food Bank. I want to sincerely thank the community and our partners for their support and spirit of giving during these drives. Your generosity yielded two 55 gallon barrels full of back to school supplies and 195 pounds of food (which translates to 150 meals from Second Harvest Food Bank)!

Our active, involved community is attracting new businesses to Evergreen. Joyce Benight is a new business owner who looks forward to opening her State Farm Insurance business in the Evergreen Village Square. Debbie Koelbl is another new entrepreneur who will be joining our community when she opens a bakery in Evergreen called Nothing Bundt Cakes next month.

New Leaf Community Market, opening soon in the Canyon Creek Plaza, has a 25-year history of creating community partnerships. One unique giving program that they started in their Santa Cruz stores and New Leaf plans to continue in San José is their Envirotokens program. Customers receive tokens worth 10¢ to give to local non-profit environmental organizations for each grocery bag they reuse.

Every May, New Leaf publishes a ballot and customers vote for their top six non-profit candidates. Each store elects its own candidates depending on the votes generated at each store. Since the inception of the program, New Leaf shoppers have reused nearly 3 million bags, resulting in a donation of over $216,814, and saving over 4,254 trees. I welcome all of these community minded businesses to Evergreen and I look forward to working with them.

Evergreen is home to the largest Skate Park in the State but its future has been uncertain because of the City's budget problems. I'm currently working on building the right partnerships to help keep Lake Cunningham's nationally recognized Skate Park open and staffed. This past budget cycle, I was able to secure a modest amount of park funding to save the Skate Park until a private non-profit entity could be established and fundraising efforts launched. This temporary funding was secured through a budget document I wrote that kept the Skate Park open during the most utilized summer months of the year when the park takes in the most revenue. The Skate Park was able to hold its summer program, which is a favorite with young skaters. I'm pleased to report that the summer reprieve has provided enough time for a community group called Save Our Skatepark (SOS), in partnership with the City, to organize and begin to pursue a strategy for long term sustainability of the Skate Park.

The Save Our Skatepark Campaign has already succeeded in raising $3,000. I'm working with park staff and the Save Our Skatepark Campaign to explore other revenue opportunities through corporate sponsorships and merchandising revenues. If you're interested in either joining the SOS fundraising committee, or being a corporate sponsor of the 68,000 square feet Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park (LCRSP), contact my office at district8@sanjoseca.gov. LCRSP is the largest Skate Park in California featuring the world's largest cradle, tallest vertical wall and largest full pipe.

There's also a lot of support for Lake Cunningham through public-private partnerships. One very successful partnership that has recently formed is the adoption of the park by the software company VMware. VMware sends out 50+ volunteers at a time to work alongside City staff to clean up the park. VMware is committed to the local community and has recently set up a non-profit foundation and asks their employees to commit 40 hours a year to volunteer work! Now that's a commitment to building community.

Every year my office partners with businesses, non-profits and City services to put on the annual Day in the Park at Lake Cunningham Park. This year we're "going social" with social media helping to spread the word. Save the Date - October 1, 2011 for free food, free pumpkins, skate demos, rock climbing wall, live music, a food truck lineup, community booths and a job fair. Come celebrate the community coming together! For more information, go to www.sanjoseca.gov/district8.

Capitol Expressway Traffic Enforcement Pilot Program

Nine of the top 18 sites of car crashes in San José are intersections along Capitol Expressway, making Capitol the most dangerous road in San José. In response, the San José Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit has implemented a pilot program focusing on traffic enforcement efforts along Capitol Expressway between Tully and Aborn Road. In addition to traffic enforcement, officers are striving to educate the drivers on the types of driving violations that cause the most accidents.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is focusing on four bad driving habits that lead to accidents: distraction (cell phone use such as texting), speed (driving over speed limit and following too closely), right of way violations (red light/arrow violations, failing to yield and unsafe lane changes) and pedestrian violations (pedestrians in roadway, crossing roadway outside of crosswalks and failure to yield to pedestrian in cross walk). The Traffic Enforcement Unit has increased enforcement of these sections in the test area.
