Dear Neighbor,
One of the things that makes Evergreen a special place to live is our wonderfully diverse community and great opportunities for both volunteerism and recreation.

It is an amazing fact that Evergreen is home to the largest Sikh Gudwara (temple) in the country. The temple complex is beautiful and truly iconic in its design. This past weekend marked the Grand Opening of the new expanded facilities, which includes a new hall, classrooms, and dining facility. The temple welcomed the entire community to an open house on Saturday April 9th, which featured tours, food and an introduction to the Sikh religion. On Sunday April 10th, I was joined by California Governor Brown and Mayor Reed to formally acknowledge and celebrate this important milestone for the 5,000 member strong San José Sikh community.
Every spring our little league baseball and softball teams hold their season openers and jamborees. This year, the weather played hard ball and forced games to be cancelled and rescheduled. Congratulations to Evergreen Little League, the largest league in San José, as they held their annual jamboree at Chaboya Middle School on April 10th. It was exciting to see everyone full of enthusiasm and ready for the new season. I was honored to throw out the first pitch at the Eastridge Little League game on April 3rd, 2011 and to recite the little league preamble: "The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of Sportsmanship, Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Good Citizenship."
The East Hills Little League jamboree was also rained out and I wish them the very best for a great and successful season. I'm proud to have all of these leagues in District 8 and commend the parents, players, coaches, and community for supporting youth sports and teaching the values of sportsmanship and fair play.
Keeping our neighborhoods clean is a goal that all of us can help achieve. Our annual Great American Litter Pick Up is a perfect opportunity to motivate and focus on cleaning up our community. On March 19th, I was thrilled to see almost 300 District 8 volunteers cleaning up their community in the rain. This year, our motivated District 8 volunteers gathered at the Smythe Boys and Girls Club kick off site to hear a briefing before heading out to clean up the neighborhood. This annual clean up focuses on picking up trash and debris around our local neighborhoods. If you have never been involved in this event think about doing so next year. This dedication is what makes San José a great place to live.
Once again I'm proud to Co-Sponsor the Second Annual 5K Rabbit Run/Walk on Saturday, April 16th at Lake Cunningham Park. This "fun-petitive" walk/run will benefit District 8 youth scholarships for parks & rec. classes and activities. Click here to learn more and register!
As always, my staff and I are committed to helping you in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to contact my office at district8@sanjoseca.gov or (408) 535-4908 with any questions or concerns you may have.
Regards, Councilmember Rose Herrera |

City Seeks Additional Funding for Safe Summer Initiative
On March 28th, City of San José Readers kicked off a campaign to raise money to help keep the City's Safe Summer Initiative fully funded this summer. The program offers grants to organizations that provide fun, safe and constructive activities for thousands of at-risk youth. Learn more
"The Safe Summer Initiative has been a key tool that has helped us reduce gang activity in San José over the past three summers," Mayor Reed said. "However, given our City's fiscal problems, we need to look for alternative ways to fund these kinds of programs that help keep our streets safe and our youth out of trouble."
During the announcement, Readers' Digest presented the City of San José with a $1,000 check for the Safe Summer Initiative as part of the publication's "We Hear You America" campaign. The City has also received generous contributions from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office ($75,000) and Boston Properties ($5,000). City leaders are hoping to raise an additional $50,000 for this year's program.
Donations in support of the Safe Summer Initiative can be made via the San José Parks Foundation. You can also help San José compete for up to $40,000 in additional funds from Readers' Digest by going online and "cheering" for San José.
Capitol Expressway Traffic Enforcement Pilot Program
Nine of the top 18 sites of car crashes are intersections along Capitol Expressway, making Capitol the most dangerous road in San José. In response, the San José Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit is implementing a pilot program to focus traffic enforcement efforts along Capitol Expressway between Tully and Tuers Roads for the next three months. In addition to traffic enforcement, officers will strive to educate the drivers on the types of driving violations that cause the most accidents.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit will focus on four bad driving habits that lead to accidents: Distraction (cell phone use, texting), Speed (driving over speed limit, following too closely), Right of way violations (red light/arrow violations, failing to yield, unsafe lane changes), and pedestrian violations (pedestrians in roadway, crossing roadway outside of crosswalks, and failure to yield to pedestrian in cross walk). As a result, motorists and pedestrians should expect to see increased enforcement of these sections in the test area.
For more information about the San José Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit, please see www.sjpd.org/BFO/SpecialOps/TEU.
