Free Shade Trees for East San José
Our City Forest, San José's urban forest non-profit, is pleased to announce it has received a State grant to plant 1,400 #15 size container trees in east San José neighborhoods!
Eligible planting locations are public property sites within 2 miles of Hwy 101, between 280/680 and Yerba Buena Road. Typical locations would include streets, schools, public buildings, and parks. Neighborhood groups, individual homeowners, schools, and facility managers are welcome to apply for free trees and technical assistance. Applicants are asked to participate in planting the trees and providing ongoing care.
Tree applications are available online at www.ourcityforest.org or by mail (call (408) 998-TREES. Our City Forest arborist will inspect all sites to ensure legal requirements are met and will obtain necessary permits, select and purchase suitable species, ensure proper planting, and provide early tree care training. All tree recipients are asked to sign a 3-year stewardship agreement.
San Jose Parks Foundation: An Opportunity to Preserve and Enhance San Jose's Parks and Trails
by Erin Hill
The people of San José have a unique opportunity to control the vitality and the ultimate destiny of their city parks, trails, and the recreation programs and services within the 200+ parks system. The opportunity comes in the form of a new community resource, San José Parks Foundation.
San José Parks Foundation has been established to provide private fundraising resources for the city's green and open spaces - all of which have sustained significant budget cuts.
Anyone interested in volunteering or donating can go directly to the foundation website at www.sanjoseparks.org or call the foundation at (408) 893-PARK.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM THE SAN JOSÉ POLICE:
Crime Prevention Unit
There is a special need to work toward public safety during the holidays. As the days get busier, we sometimes forget to take special care in order to avoid being a victim. Shoppers and homeowners should also take basic crime prevention precautions to avoid robbery and burglary.
HOME SAFETY
- Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even if you will only be gone for a few minutes.
- Don't put large displays of holiday gifts in view of your windows or doors.
- When going on trips or just out for the evening, use automatic timers to turn indoor lights off and on to make it appear you are at home.
- Immediately after Christmas, mark new gifts with your California Driver License or I.D. Number.
- Be sure your Christmas tree is sturdy so that small children can't pull it over on themselves.
- Do not leave tree lights on while you're away from home.
SHOPPING TIPS
- When shopping, park your car in a well-lit area.
- Parked cars should have all windows tightly closed and all doors locked.
- Never place packages on floors or counters or leave them unattended when purchasing additional items.
- Women should carry their purses under their arms and men should carry their wallets in an inside coat pocket.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Whenever possible, pay for purchases with checks or credit cards.
- When possible, place packages in the trunk of your car and lock it. If you have no trunk, be certain they are out of sight.
- Be especially alert regarding small children when you are out gift shopping. Teach them to go to a store clerk if they become separated from you.
ONE FINAL WORD
PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! CHOOSE A DESIGNATED DRIVER WHO PROMISES NOT TO DRINK.
