article1Local Healer Promotes the Health Benefits of a Regular Spiritual Practice

Quantum Healer and founder of Holistic Montclair Safiya Oni Brown knows it might "sound a little cheesy," but she says being a healer was "more a calling than a choice."

From organic baking to green cleaning to becoming a Holistic Health Safiya Oni BrownCounselor, each job called her to assist people in their lives on a deeper level, says Brown, who remembers always getting "gentle nudges" that have helped her to make decisions. "This awareness has saved me money, my health and my life on many occasions," she says. In other words, her spirit saved her.

According to Deepak Chopra, "quantum healing" is healing the body and mind from a level which is not manifest at a sensory level. Meditation is a very important aspect of quantum healing, particularly to achieve and maintain good health. When one doesn't have any regular spiritual practice, such as prayer, meditation, or affirmation, Brown says, illness looms.

Spirituality, says Brown, is simply "strengthening ones relationship with the inner-self.  There is no need to believe in a God, per say, though most people who are spiritually inclined do believe in some higher power." When working with clients, Brown uses meditation and intuitive healing to guide her clients into "perfect balance with their spiritual self" and assists them in honing their own abilities so that they become their own healer.   "Without spiritual or emotional outlets, blockages will eventually turn into illness," she says.  When you have a daily spiritual practice, however, blockages do not have time to gain momentum and grow into illness.

"I always tell people that the voices that critique us are 'mind' and the knowingness or gut feelings are 'spirit,'" says Brown. For more information about Safiya Oni Brown, visit www.radiantalchemy.org

article2Upcoming Workshops To Demonstrate Alternative Approaches to Pain-Free Childbirth

More women are seeking information on how to have an empowered, calm pregnancy using minimally- or non-invasive methods. Frayda Kafka, a certified hypnotist specializing in pregnancy and birth who has been doing therapeutic work for more than 30 years, is excited about this trend. "It's great that such positive publicity for hypnosis and meditation during birth is leading to more women exploring their options," she says.

As a hypnotherapist, Kafka sees many individuals for smoking cessation and weight loss, two conditions that are known to be fairly easily remedied by hypnotherapy. "Smoking cessation is what people think of when they think hypnosis," she says."But I'm now spreading a message that I'm really passionate about:  Hypnosis leads to an easy pregnancy, a calm birth, and a happy, relaxed mom."

This month, Kafka will be leading two hypnosis workshops in South Orange. The first, a free workshop for practitioners on June 21, is geared toward doulas, midwives, chiropractors, and other health and wellness professionals who support women during pregnancy and childbirth.  The second, on June 22, is "Hypnosis for Pregnant Women and Their Partners." This workshop costs $50/couple.

Hypnosis is a very effective tool for combating fear and anxiety during pregnancy, as well as easing pain during labor, Kafka says.  "There are women who love the idea of having a baby, but are terrified by the pain they expect from labor or are so traumatized by something in their past that they can't experience their pregnancy with freedom and ease." Research shows that hypnosis during labor reduces nausea, vomiting, and pain. The benefits don't end there: Hypnosis also facilitates postnatal bonding, as well as healthy postpartum adjustments for new mothers.

In addition to workshops, Kafka sees clients on both an individual basis and in groups. For more information, visit www.hypbirths.com

Article3This Month from Mindful Living NJ Insider: Resources for Fertility, Pregnancy, and New Motherhood

Many women claim to have found their way to holistic health and wellness through their desire to start and lead a healthy family. It would make sense, then, that practitioners would create offerings for women who struggle with fertility challenges, those who are pregnant, or new mothers.

This month in NJ, we have a few offerings ripe for the picking. At Shakti Yoga and Living Arts, Madhu Krishnappa Maron, a certified life coach and mom, will offer a "A Mom is Born: Gestating Motherhood Workshop" on June 26. This workshop is in addition to their regular prenatal yoga classes.

At a June 28 all-day, free, open house to the public, Dr. Michael Magwood introduces his new pilates studio in Clifton which features IM=X Pilates. This particular brand of pilates has specialized exercise programs for moms looking to continue their workout during pregnancy, and maintain core strength for optimum birth. Dr. Magwood, a chiropractor specialized in prenatal wellness, also supports women throughout their pregnancy.

In Montclair, acupuncturist and yoga instructor Patti Safian supports woman interested in optimizing their wellness for fertility. Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbs actually improve IVF success rate and may be used in tandem with more conventional fertility approaches. Check out her yoga for fertility classes at Yoga Montclair.

And on June 24, Rita Desnoyers-Garcia of Meditating Mamas, will offer a free workshop "Stressed Out to Blissed Out," both in person in South Orange or via teleconference from your home. Learn how to eliminate stress immediately and enjoy the present moment with yourself and your family.
