article1Respira Salt Wellness Center Brings Ancient Remedy to Modern Facility in NJ
During the 1800s, miners and others suffering from respiratory illness in Russia and Europe spent hours in naturally occurring mineral salt caves to alleviate their symptoms. This natural therapy has been recreated using modern technology called "Halotherapy" and is featured in a new NJ wellness center.

"Since salt mines are not easily found or available in all parts of the world, physicians and researchers developed a way to create an artificial environment in which conditions are similar to a salt cave," says Etya Novik, owner of Respira Salt Wellness Center in Berkeley Heights.  "Instead of caves, our clients sit in comfortable, state-of-the-art rooms that look very much like true salt mines. They breathe in a dry mist of Dead Sea mineral salts that clears their airways."

Salt room therapy has been popular for years in Israel, where Etya and her husband Tal researched the technology before bringing it to NJ.  "We spoke to a woman there whose toddler has asthma," Novik says. "She read about salt therapy in the paper and, while skeptical, decided to give it a try. After about four treatments in the salt room, she started to notice improvement in her daughter's breathing; after a course of 15 treatments, her daughter's episodes became much more infrequent."

The Noviks' own daughter is asthmatic so they related to the Israeli woman's stories. "I'll never forget the days we had to physically pin our daughter down to put the nebulizer mask on her--at the same time wondering about the strength and side-effects of the medications," she says.

According to Novik, salt therapy is a non-invasive alternative or complementary treatment for asthma, sinus problems, allergies, recurring bronchial infections, and lung disease. "Salt micro particles open up the nasal airways, reduce nasal congestion, kill bacteria and help in the drainage of the sinuses," she says. "It's a great option for pregnant women or just holistic-minded individuals who are hesitant to use over-the-counter medication to treat their or their child's asthma or allergies."

Respira also is equipped with a "children's room." Parents may sit inside with their children or watch through a window. For more information or to see Respira in person, visit www.respirasalt.com. For a limited time (visit their web site for details), your first visit is free!

article2Swim Safely This Summer: Why To Worry About Chlorine And Where to Go Instead

And while we're on the topic of salt: What's a safer alternative to heavily-chlorinated pools this summer? Pools employing alternative filtration systems, such as salt and other natural elements instead. At least two commercial pools in NJ have made the switch from harsh chemicals to natural elements. 24-Hour Fitness in Hasbrouck Heights uses salt and CGI Holistic Fitness in Closter uses natural sands and stones.

"If you swim in chlorinated water for extended periods of time, your skin will become itchy and dry, your hair becomes brittle," says Wendy Hall, general manager of CGI Holistic. "Young children are even more delicate and unprotected than adults, so our pool is a much safer and more enjoyable place for kids to learn to swim. We conducted a lot of research to determine the best way to reduce the use of chlorine so that our members could enjoy swimming without its harmful effects."

CGI Holistic uses a double water filtration system which uses natural elements such as stones and sand to filter and cleanse the water, says Hall. "Consequently the water is almost potable! We do have to use small amounts of chlorine, but compared to typical public pools your swim experience will be extremely enjoyable and almost completely chemical free."

Chlorine has long been known for its toxic health effects.  Chlorine gas in its pure form can cause symptoms ranging from irritation of the eyes, to coughing and vomiting, and even to death. While chlorine in a pool is diluted, think about all the times your child swallows water while swimming. Studies show swallowing and breathing in chlorine can lead to long term chronic health problems, including asthma. Plus, there's no way to really know how the chlorine is being regulated within the pool. What to do when swimming in the town pool is the only choice? Shower (preferably with soap) immediately after a swim. Or, better yet, find a clean natural water source like a lake.

Article3This Month's Mindful Living NJ Insider Tips: The Benefits of Local Honey; Preparing Local Asparagus
Ever since the appearance of Dr. Lawrence Rosen of The Whole Child Center on Good Morning America, more Mindful Living NJ community members have been asking me where to find local honey. A natural remedy for seasonal allergies as recommended by Dr. Rosen, the honey must be local and not just the store-bought variety that comes packaged in a plastic bear.

Here's a local honey resource for you: Herbertsville Honey in Pt. Pleasant. I was lucky enough to meet owners, Alf and Cecelia Berg at the Highlands Greenfest last weekend (which was awesome for the whole family, by the way!) and bought a glass jar of their homemade, NJ born and bred honey. We will be enjoying a spoonful every day as a natural way to combat seasonal allergies.
