article1UMDNJ Now Offers Education Opportunities in Complementary and Integrative Medicine

UMDNJWe're seeing health care transform as the emphasis increasingly shifts towards prevention, health promotion and enhancing wellbeing. One NJ organization that is at the forefront of these developments is the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (ICAM), based at the School of Health Related Professions at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. For nearly 10 years, ICAM has been a national leader in education and research in "Integrative Medicine," says Karen Malone, Director of Education and an assistant professor at the school.

In an effort to expand their outreach efforts to the community, ICAM recently launched a range of weekend Continuing Education Certificate courses open to the local community, as well as to health professionals. Taught by professors and clinician experts, these courses allow students to explore a diverse range of healing traditions including aromatherapy, ayurveda, herbalism, homeopathy, integrative health coaching and self-care, massage and mind-body medicine, including meditation and yoga.

ICAM also offers a Masters of Science in Health Sciences, specializing in Integrative Health and Wellness. This online course provides individuals who work full-time the chance to study at their own pace. Now in its fourth successful year, says Malone, the course attracts a range of health professionals, including Nurses, MDs, and CAM practitioners.

"ICAM is committed to expanding education opportunities in Complementary and Integrative Medicine both locally and nationally," says Executive Director Dr. Adam Perlman. "As one of the country's leading Integrative Medicine centers, ICAM is dedicated to meeting the educational needs of practitioners and the local community through its new and expanded portfolio of courses in Complementary and Integrative Medicine." article2Local Therapist Gives Back to Community with Free Mental Imagery Class

More and more psychotherapists are taking a whole person approach to therapy. Among this group is Montclair-based Amy Kruvant, LCSW, BCIA, who provides psychotherapy aimed at the integration of mind and body.  Her repertoire of healing techniques includes mental imagery, a form of mental biofeedback.

"Mental imagery can be therapeutic and instructive," Kruvant says, who particularly notes its success in helping her clients deal with stress and depression, as well as physical illness. "A person came to see me to address her long term asthma," Kruvant recalls. "After one session of mental imagery, she felt a shift in her condition."

Empowered and inspired by the changes she has seen with her own clients, Kruvant wants to share her healing techniques with other clinicians. She is offering a class for clinicians of all fields and the general public called "Using Mental Imagery for Personal and Professional Well-being."

Furthermore, the class is offered at no cost. Kruvant's intention in offering the class for free is to give back to the community.  "What I am learning and sharing," says Kruvant, "is a healing system based on having no expectations or attachment to outcomes. Mental imagery is a modality which has been used for more than 4000 years. I believe it can be added to anyone's inventory of healing techniques."

Classes will be held on April 24, May 1, and May 8. Space is limited. Contact Kruvant at 973-744-4300. Kruvant is a graduate of the American Institute of Mental Imagery in NYC. Also trained in EMDR, TFT as well as certified in "Neuro" biofeedback, Kruvant offers individual consultations by appointment. More info at www.amykruvant.com

article3A Green Home Is An Allergy-Free Zone
It's spring, and while many of us jump for joy at the prospect of saying goodbye to winter weather for a while, we also look to clean house, and prepare for what's ahead...allergy season.

This year, try taking a proactive approach to combating spring allergy seasons by cleaning up what winter has left behind and by being mindful of what you use to clean your home. Months of being indoors, combined with environmental allergens, such as mold, pet danger, or dust mites, leads to poor indoor air quality. When you use harsh, chemical cleansers, you're often just contributing to the poor air quality, not improving it.

"Many people see a major improvement in their allergy and asthma symptoms when they move away from toxic brand-name cleansers," says Jen Maidenberg, founder of Mindful Living NJ. "We were raised to associate cleanliness with a synthetic, lemon-fresh scent that frankly, is doing you much more harm than good. Switching back to basic cleaning solutions, ones that use baking soda or white vinegar, will likely improve your health, save the planet, and save you money. It's so simple, even your cleaning lady will be on board."

Jen Maidenberg will be offering a workshop on Mon., April 26 in Maplewood called "Detox Your Home," the second of a three-part series called "Your Holistic Life 101: Simple Strategies to Get
Started."  >>Learn more
