NJ-based OB/Gyn Offers Less Invasive Approach to Preventative Breast Wellness

Parsippany-based Dr. Dawn Goldstein is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who says she "operates like a midwife," referring specifically to her holistic approach to all areas of women's health.

"Women as a group need to take a more active role in defining the ways we address important women's health issues," says Goldstein, who is not only open to childbirth choices, such as vaginal birth after Cesarean, but also stresses the need for more preventative care, particularly as it pertains to breast health.

"We need to better educate ourselves about the various techniques available to us in the fight against breast cancer," she says, "and to the importance of taking a multi-modal approach to breast cancer detection." ThermographySpecifically, Goldstein is referring to breast thermography, a detection mode she employs in her practice as a complement to conventional screening methods like mammogram. Breast thermography is a state-of-the-art screening procedure that captures images of the breast to aid in the early detection of birregularities. It is based on the principle of temperature variation, the slight increase in heat that is almost always generated when chemical and blood vessel activity occurs in pre-cancerous tissue and the areas surrounding a developing breast cancer. Most notably, says Goldstein, whereas mammograms expose a woman to radiation, thermography "involves no radiation."

Also, the compression of the breast involved with mammography is often painful. Thermographic images are taken a few feet away and the patient is not touched. Goldstein emphasizes though, in her opinion, it is extremely important to understand thermography is "not an alternative to mammogram, but an adjunctive, complementary test." Some natural health advocates like Dr. Joseph Mercola recommend thermography as an alternative to mammogram.

You Are What You Eat: Top Resources for Learning How Food is Processed and Why You Should Care
Defesne of FoodMore and more Americans are starting to pay attention to words like free-range, organic, and grass-fed, or acronyms like rBGH and GMO. Why? Because reading food labels and understanding how food is processed in this country is no longer a hobby for the super-conscious, it's an imperative for anyone who cares about their family's health.
While all the information available seems overwhelming at times, there are a few essential books, blogs or films that can help you get started. As with anything, take into consideration that none of these are the bible of food facts....just eye-opening perspectives to help you start exploring what's right for you and your family.

Try:
1. Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.
4. Fast Food Nation (book and film)

As with most changes, small, simple steps are usually the most manageable and impactful. If you need help making changes and would like support for creating a customized plan that works for your family, contact Mindful Living NJ to schedule an appointment for a holistic lifestyle consultation, done in-person or over the phone.

For National Nutrition Month, Local Dietitian Wants to Know: Are You "Eating Right?"

Registered Dieititian Debra Brown-Grossman, who practices in Montclair and Clifton, wrote-in to remind Mindful Living NJ community members that March is "National Nutrition Month." Registered Dietitians all over the country are educating and giving out information on making thoughtful food choices based on this year's theme "nutrition from the ground up."

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign implemented annually in March and is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of using a registered dietitian to help consumers make more informed food choices and to develop sound eating and physical activity habits. You can get more information about this year's theme by going to ADA's website: www.eatright.org

Brown-Grossman, who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator and Pediatric Nutrition Specialist, helps families navigate picky eaters, kids' weight issues and food problems, and provides adults with a non-diet approach to weight loss. Contact her for more information at:
