Chronic Stress Often Manifests As Chronic Illness, Says Local Holistic Health Practitioner

From the point of view of Traditional Chinese Medicine, chronic unrelenting stress affects us not just in the mind, Meridian Personbut throughout the entire body, says Debra Bernath, who practices Qigong Meridian Therapy (QMT) and reflexology.

"Chronic stress and anger disrupt the harmonious relationship between our internal organs, particularly in the liver," she says. According to TCM, the liver has a close relationship with digestion and blood circulation, among other functions. Chronic conditions, which may not show up on medical tests, are signs that there is a Qi (energy) imbalance, she says.

TCM's fundamental principle is that as long as Qi remains strong and flows freely in the body, the organs function harmoniously and disease and illness cannot enter.

"When we are under stress our sympathetic nervous system is in charge," Bernath explains. "This is the 'fight or flight' response, which takes over when emotions are strong. Breathing increases, the body perspires, eyes dilate. Digestion, urination and elimination stop. Many extreme emotions such as anger, fear and anxiety, may elicit a physical response."

To address these issues, Bernath offers clients Qigong Meridian Therapy (QMT) and reflexology in Maplewood, Jersey City, and NYC.  Both often result in deep relaxation, stress reduction, an immune boost and a return to homeostasis.  Until the end of the year, she's offering $10 off a 1-hour session to Mindful Living NJ readers. Children Who Meditate May See Increase in Concentration and Communication

Adults aren't the only ones who might benefit from a regular meditation practice. So might children, says local expert, Andrea DeHoyos of Mindful Energy Work Studio in Berkeley Heights.

"Studies show meditation helps synchronize the right and Andrew DeHoyos conducting meditation workshopleft hemispheres of the brain enabling children to effectively communicate, resulting in mental clarity and a better ability to focus," says DeHoyos. "Regular meditation may help kids focus in school and increase test scores." This work is a less invasive alternative for children diagnosed with ADHD.

DeHoyos explains that meditation might also be useful to heal emotional trauma in children, such as distress resulting from death, divorce, illness, or big life change. "Trauma is connected to images and memory, a right brain function," says DeHoyos. "Hearing and speaking are, for most people, a left brain function. It is therefore more effective to heal from trauma using the right brain function: imagery, body sensations, feelings and color, than left." Beginning in January, Mindful Energy Work Studio will offer a three week course for kids ages 9 - 12 called "Meditation for the Imagination Class for Kids and Parents." The 1-hour long class includes a game, an art project and a guided meditation.

"Children and parents are led through a story that they help to create through their own imagination," says DeHoyos. "These meditations incorporate all the senses so the experiences are powered by what the children hear, feel, smell and, in some cases, even taste." This experience is powerful for two reasons, she says:
1. Operating through the senses helps children to stay present.
2. It speaks to the individual learning style of each child: auditory, visual or kinesthetic.
DeHoyos also offers private one-on-one sessions. For more information, visit her web site.

Profoundly and Personally Affected By Holistic Healer, Local Woman Creates "Wellness Gala"

Deb Peterson was a marketing professional working in sales for 15 years when quite unexpectedly, her oldest son started to display odd behaviors. Once he was diagnosed with severe Tourette Syndrome, Peterson says she "exhausted all traditional medical therapies available, yet his symptoms worsened and his prognosis was bleak."

Peterson discovered NJ-based energy healer and chiropractor, Dr. Robert Kandarjian, who worked with her son and their family to completely heal her son of Tourette in less than two months time.

"I was transformed by this experience," says Peterson, who lives in Rockaway. "This motivated me to inform people everywhere that these modalities are legitimate options that can help any type of physical, emotional, mental or spiritual issues or problems." In 2009, Peterson organized the first "Wellness Gala: Balance Your Life," which featured a mini-workshops and demonstrations in the area of holistic health, wellness, and beauty. She has since sponsored three more Galas in various cities in NJ.

Tickets are now on sale for the next Wellness Gala, which is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, from 1 - 6pm in Morristown. Purchase your ticket in advance and get three free raffle tickets. $20/ticket; $35/couple. Save only when using Mindful Living NJ promo code MLNJ2009. Purchase tickets here.
