At Local Wellness Center, Naturopathic Doctor Offers Holistic Approach to Healing and Care
"My parents both succumbed to cancer within a couple years of each other when I was a teenager," explains Marda Sussman, of her decision to become a naturopathic doctor. "And it was then that the desire to find answers and help others began." Disenchanted by the type of care her parents received, which she says focused more on treating the symptoms of illness rather than the root cause, Dr. Sussman turned to naturopathic medicine, the focal point of which is prevention and wellness. "Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability," she says.
Sussman, who sees patients at The Rocking Chair, a multi-disciplinary women's wellness center in Englewood, says that she helps people restore their natural state of health and well-being through the following:
· Identifying and removing the causes of disease · Directing the client to the most effective, least invasive or toxic treatments that support the mind and body's ability to heal itself · And, providing wellness education to promote informed healthcare choices
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are trained as general practitioners who are experts in the prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment of both acute and chronic health conditions. "Just like a conventional doctor," says Sussman, "an ND is trained in the field of primary care from a four year, graduate level naturopathic medical school." Specialists in natural medicine, they are trained in both the medical sciences and in the use of natural therapeutics. In NJ, however, a naturopathic doctor is not a licensed medical practitioner, but considered a health consultant. Are You On A Hormonal Roller Coaster? Upcoming Yoga Series Works Towards Balance
During their reproductive lifespan, women may suffer from a variety of hormone-related symptoms, ranging from PMS to infertility to migraines to postpartum depression. One way to achieve greater hormonal balance is through yoga poses and breathing techniques that have helped women for thousands of years.
Ires Wilbanks, a local yoga instructor, will be offering a five-week workshop "Yoga for Balancing Women's Hormones" at Shakti Yoga & Living Arts in Maplewood beginning Sun., Nov. 8. Wilbanks designed the practice with poses she gleaned from her prenatal training and her own research and personal practice. Wilbanks says she wanted to teach this series because she thinks "women need to honor their cycles."
"So many practices were originally designed by men for men and young men in particular," she says. "As much as I love a vigorous practice, there are times when we need to tune in and connect to our true nature. This practice has helped me and I think it can help other women too." No prior yoga experience is required. Cost is $75 for the 5-week series. Drop-ins welcome for $18. If you already have a Shakti class card, you may use that as well. Take One Step Towards Stress Reduction By Being 'In The Moment,' Says Psychologist
Are you suffering? Is anxiety, fear, or anger keeping you from making meaningful connections? "We have more control over our interactions and way of being than we might think," says says local mindfulness-based psychotherapist Rob Handelman. Mindfulness is about paying attention, he says, "in and to the present moment." In practice, this might manifest as meditative exercises or taking a Hatha yoga class.
"Mindfulness carries powerful benefits for general health and stress relief," says Handelman. "For individuals seeking greater support in their practice of mindfulness, particularly as it pertains to stress and anxiety reduction, mindfulness-based psychotherapy may be a good fit." Handelman, who integrated mindfulness into his practice after studying the work of Ram Dass and other Buddhist practitioners, suggests that "by focusing on the present moment, we can create for ourselves an inner state of nonjudgmental awareness that cultivates self-acceptance and compassion." "If we can become more aware of what's happening inside of us (physically, mentally, and emotionally); and when we begin to notice how much time and energy we spend dwelling on the past and future, we start to get perspective," says Handelman. "Mindfulness is a remarkable tool for stress and anxiety, and research shows it is impactful on both psychological and physical levels." Handelman leads mindfulness-based workshops in NYC and NJ. His next workshop, "Staying Sane Over The Holidays: How to Feel Alive and Invigorated Instead of Aggravated" will be held in Maplewood on Nov. 18. Handelman also was recently featured on Maplewood Patch for his work on mindful parenting. Visit his web site at www.robhandelman.com
