Myofascial Release Therapy Is A Holistic Solution for Pain, Trauma, and Sports Injury
Many individuals who have experienced a sports injury or suffered physical trauma from an accident often think that surgery or invasive treatment are the only answers. However, there are less invasive alternatives to surgery that may be as effective or more effective, particularly as it relates to the time it takes to recover.

"Myofascial Release is a mind-body therapy that is safe and gentle and consistently achieves long-lasting results," says Susan Miller, a local therapist who uses hands-on healing and bodywork to treat clients with pain. "Myofascial Release sounds clinical, but it's a very holistic treatment. It actually facilitates a release which can be both physical and emotional."
Myofascial Release specifically works with fascia-- a tough, connective tissue which is found throughout the body, from head to toe without interruption.  "Trauma, bad posture, or inflammation can make the fascia tough and binding, which exerts excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, or organs," Miller says. "This results in pain and restricted range of motion.  With gentle sustained pressure, we can ease fascial restrictions and relieve pain."
Miller has achieved results particularly with clients suffering from back and neck pain, headaches and sports injuries. Depending upon the person and the areas to be treated, clients may feel relief immediately following treatment.

What's the Truth About the H1N1 Vaccination?
H1N1 continues to be a media darling this fall. According to the media, we're possibly facing a flu epidemic . Whether or not this will prove to be true, there are ways to feel empowered and be in action to stay healthy this season.

What you should know, especially if you have young children, is that flu shots typically contain mercury, a neurotoxin that damages brain and nerve cells. In 1999, government agencies called for the removal of mercury in vaccines. However, many still have unsafe levels of mercury. In addition to mercury, many vaccines contain other toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, polysorbate 80, and beta propiolactone (all carcinogens); as well as MSG.

Should you get the H1N1 flu shot? No one can make the decision for you. However, consider:
1. It's your right to ask your doctor what's inside your flu shot and expect a respectful, thorough answer. Something for parents to consider: Would you feed your child a packaged food if you didn't know the ingredients? Probably not.
2. Is your family prone to chronic illness? Ask your doctor how the ingredients in the vaccine may impact you or your child.
3. Are your health-related decision ACTIONS made by informed choice or REACTIONS to fear? You are your and your child's greatest advocate. Your voice can be your most powerful tool as it applies to your holistic health experience.

COLD AND FLU SEASON TIP: Preventative wellness techniques may be your greatest ally this fall and winter. "Obviously wash your hands, especially before you eat," says chiropractor Dr. Andrew Halperin.  "But proactively choosing a wellness regimen to boost your immune system may also protect you." Halperin suggests reducing your sugar and processed food intake, getting sufficient sleep, and, of course, consider visiting your local chiropractor for evaulation and adjustment.

New Mindful Living Salon: Holistic Approach to Preventing and Treating Migraine Headaches

Anyone who has suffered a migraine knows that its not just an ordinary headache. Migraine headaches range from painful to Acorn Table Fairblinding to debilitating. For years, the most commonly prescribed treatment for migraines has been over-the-counter headache medicine like acetaminophen, or stronger prescription drugs.

A more holistic approach to dealing with migraines might involve keeping a detailed diet journal to see if any particular foods trigger migraines. Common culprits are red wine, chocolate, or food additives. Other triggers include chemical or environmental sensitivity, hormonal changes and stress. Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, or neurofeedback may assist in reducing the frequency of or symptoms of skull-crushing migraines.

Next month, community members will join together to discover ways to deal with migraines using alternative and complementary forms of healing. A unique concept, the Mindful Living Salon  will be part workshop (including presentations from local holistic practitioners), part wellness fair, and part support group.
WHEN: Friday, October 16, 7 - 9 pm

Are You A Parent In Need of a Time Out? Upcoming Mindfulness Workshop May Challenge the Way You Think About Parenting
Mindfulness is a practice that enables an individual to identify and work with habitual emotional reactions. By focusing on the present moment, says psychologist Dr. Rob Handelman, we can create for ourselves an inner state of nonjudgmental awareness that cultivates self-acceptance and compassion, clarifies unique strengths, and enables positive, healthy responses to difficult experiences.

Dr. Handelman, who practices a Mindfulness-based integrative psychotherapy called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), will be leading a workshop on October 29, from 7:45 pm - 9:45 pm specifically for moms who need guidance with parenting hurdles, such as dealing with emotions, frustrations, impatience, or short tempers when parenting children. The workshop, which will be the first in a series, will take place in Maplewood.

"In this workshop geared towards mothers, we will examine how we process, approach, and react to conflict with our children," says Handelman. "My intention is to offer tools that may help moms look at their emotions in a different way, remain present in challenging situations with their kids, and still to be able to respond effectively."
