Couple Says That Learning the "Art of Living," Changed their Lives, Improved their Marriage "I was working in a very high stress Wall Street firm six years ago," says Pavithra Krishnan. "Add that to some stress in our personal lives, and that made for some challenges in our relationship." Until, friends suggested Pavithra and her husband Rajeev try out a course on meditation and breath work called The Art of Living.
"The most immediate and apparent benefit of doing the course," Krishnan says, was "instantaneous relief." "It was as if tons of dirt accumulated over a whole lifetime had been sucked clean out of us," she says . "I experienced more clarity of thought and heightened awareness--a greater sense of joy and happiness."
The cornerstone of the Art of Living course is a very powerful and rhythmic breathing process developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar called the "Sudarshan Kriya". It's facilitated by an educational and humanitarian not-for-profit organization which has an additional mission of "uplifting society one individual at a time through service projects," says Krishnan.
"Art of Living totally transformed our lives," says Krishnan. So much so that the Krishnans now facilitate and lead Art of Living Courses themselves. They're inviting community members to participate in the next course, which will run September 24 - 28 in Springfield, NJ. The course, which usually costs $450, is being offered at a special rate of $175/person. Register at here with discount code EQS9655 or learn more at www.artofliving.org.

Making Massage a Regular Component of Your Wellness Regimen Provides Long-Term Benefits When evaluating our wellness regimen, many of us consider our diet, the amount of exercise we're getting, or the types of supplements we take. Often times, we forget to consider that ongoing therapeutic treatments like massage can provide much-needed stress relief. And experts say that stress is one of the leading causes of illness and disease.
"Getting massage on a regular basis is really one way to truly take charge of your health," says certified massage therapist, Sue Rexford. "It has cumulative effects, as it pertains to both stress relief and pain alleviation." Whether you're a busy mom with shoulder pain from carrying babies, or a marathon runner with sore muscles, she says, getting regular massage will help get rid of the pain and keep it away for longer periods. Massage also can improve muscle tone, reduce joint inflammation, and stimulate lymph circulation which boosts immunity.
In her 20 years of practicing a range of massage styles, including Swedish, Shiatsu, deep tissue, and prenatal massage, Rexford has learned that one of the greatest benefits of massage often occurs in mind and spirit. "It provides a full hour where someone is devoted entirely to you. I have found that regular massage allows me to think more clearly and creatively. I am able to give back to my family and child and practice massage less selfishly."
Rexford recently opened up a new massage studio called Bohdi Tree at 75 South Orange Ave in South Orange. To schedule an appointment, call her at 973-761-5185. New clients who mention this article will get a $10 discount off your first appointment!

Hypnotherapy May Be Used to Improve Concentration, and for Exam Success
The uses for hypnotherapy are wide-ranging -- from quitting smoking to achieving pain-free natural childbirth. Many don't know, however, that hypnotherapy can be used to improve concentration, increase memory capacity, and achieve success in studies and on exams. In working with clients ranging from grade school students diagnosed with learning challenges to police officers studying for captain's exams, Dr. Suhail Jarroush has seen remarkable results for students whom have been taught how to enter a state of deep relaxation called self-hypnosis. "Learning self-hypnosis," says Jarroush, a clinical hypnotherapist in Lincoln Park, "may really magnify a student's powers of concentration and can even lead to a joy of studying." "Hypnosis for exam skills, for memory improvement, or for general anxiety are all easily accessible," he says. At the Aquarian Sun Healing and Learning Center, Jarroush will be offering two upcoming workshops on learning self-hypnosis for exam and study success -- one on September 26, from 1- 3 pm, and again on October 10, from 1- 3 pm. "This class is suitable for children or adults. Many adults feel they are out of practice when they have to take professional exams, like the Series 7 for instance," he says. "This course will help them regain their confidence and achieve great success." The cost is $35 per person. Jarroush also offers private sessions and consultations. Upcoming Global Yoga Event Inspires Peace, Awareness, and Collective Consciousness
Global Mala is an annual community yoga event conceived as a way to help raise awareness and funding for some of our world's biggest issues. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on Sept. 19th or 20th, Fall Equinox, as the yoga world's offering to further the UN International Peace Day. In 2008, more than 300 Global Mala events were held all over the world. In NJ this year, 33 yoga studios and businesses are committing their time and efforts to the cause.
Amy Witmyer, of Sacred Space Yoga and Wellness in West Orange, is proud to be a part of the effort. "This is a great opportunity to raise the vibration on the planet, share the teachings of yoga, and have lots of fun in the process with other like minded people," says Witmyer. At the event, Witmyer also will be showcasing the "Om Gym," a multi-purpose portable inversion therapy device, that is a great complementary accessory to regular yoga practice. "It's designed to increase flexibility, balance, coordination, and personal power, while experiencing the uplifting effects of heightened prana and life force," says Witmyer, the exclusive representative of Om Gym in NJ. Global Mala NJ takes place Sunday, Sept. 20, from 9 am - 2 pm at St. Phillip's Academy, 342 Central Ave, Newark. Click here for more info. |

New Mindful Living Salon: Holistic Approach to Preventing and Treating Migraine Headaches
Anyone who has suffered a migraine knows that its not just an ordinary headache. Migraine headaches range from painful to blinding to debilitating. For years, the most commonly prescribed treatment for migraines has been over-the-counter headache medicine like acetaminophen, or stronger prescription drugs. A more holistic approach to dealing with migraines might involve keeping a detailed diet journal to see if any particular foods trigger migraines. Common culprits are red wine, chocolate, or food additives. Other triggers include chemical or environmental sensitivity, hormonal changes and stress. Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, or neurofeedback may assist in reducing the frequency of or symptoms of skull-crushing migraines. Next month, community members will join together to discover ways to deal with migraines using alternative and complementary forms of healing. A unique concept, the Mindful Living Salon will be part workshop (including presentations from local holistic practitioners), part wellness fair, and part support group. WHEN: Friday, October 16, 7 - 9 pm WHERE: Shakti Yoga & Living Arts, 1861 Springfield Ave., Maplewood
$10 IN ADVANCE. $15 AT THE DOOR. REGISTER USING PAYPAL BELOW.
