This Spring, Leave Your Allergies at the Door It seems to me that every May for the past few years, I've heard friends and neighbors complain that "this is the worst allergy season ever" or "I never had allergies before this year." Indeed, the experts at pollen.com have been forecasting a heavier allergy season this year taking into account weather and wind patterns. As someone who has suffered from terrible Spring allergies almost all my life, however, I've actually found the past few seasons to be mild for me. And I attribute that to some very simple lifestyle adjustments I've made. If you are finding yourself impacted by the pollen counts this season, here are some simple tips for reducing your reactions.
1. Leave your shoes at the door. Tracking in pollen from outdoors will make sure your home is not an allergy safe haven.
2. Shower and wash your hair before bed. Otherwise you will be sleeping in and breathing in everything that's causing you to sneeze, wheeze, and water.
3. Close your windows. As lovely as a Spring breeze might feel, it's a major no-no for allergy sufferers.
In addition to the above, you might want to consider boosting your immunity through dietary changes, supplements, or alternative and complementary therapies. I've found that eliminating dairy and sugar from my diet, getting rid of toxic house cleansers, and switching to organic foods has really contributed to a reduction in allergy symptoms for me. To find a local practitioner who may be able to help you combat your allergies once and for all, please contact me,

What's So Important About Composting?
Did you know that green waste from your yard and kitchen accounts for about 25 percent of the material being hauled from your home each week? Composting provides a way not only of reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting that waste into a product that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or house plants. Otherwise it ends up in depleting landfill space.
I t may seem like a big lifestyle change to start composting, but organic gardener Virgina Lamb makes it easy and fun! Lamb helps community members learn the basics of composting in user-friendly educational workshops and lectures. Lamb will be conducting her next workshop on Thursday, May 28, at 7 pm at the Maplewood Memorial Library in Maplewood. The workshop is $10, but for $60 you get the info and a brand new compost bin and kitchen scrap bucket. Registration is required. For more information, contact Virginia Lamb at 347-262-0704 or compost.education@yahoo.com |
