Acupressure: The DIY Healing Modality
Looking for a non-invasive pain management technique you can do yourself? Acupressure is a great solution for individuals suffering from common ailments, such as migraine headaches, sinus pressure, menstrual cramps, asthma, and fatigue.
"Acupressure is the oldest healing technique known to man," says Dr. Suhail Jarroush, president of The Aquarian Sun Healing and Learning Center in Lincoln Park. "Monks in Tibet discovered that steadily applied pressure restores the normal flow of energy through the body's meridians and can cure the body of many ailments." Dr. Jarroush, who both practices and teaches acupressure, explains "there are several points on the skin that when stimulated properly by steady pressure will send bioelectrical signals through the brain to major glands to release endorphins (pain-relieving chemicals naturally released by the body). When the pain is blocked, the muscles will relax, allowing better breathing and an influx of oxygen. Acupressure is a good way to reduce tension, decrease stress, induce relaxation, and maintain general good health." The good news for you? Anyone can learn acupressure! The Aquarian Sun offers Acupressure Workshops on an ongoing basis. The next one is Saturday, May 31, from 10 am - 1pm. In this workshop, participants will:
- Locate acupressure points and learn how to apply the necessary pressure to these points
- Learn pressure points associated with many common ailments
- Learn a general maintenance regimen of pressure points to balance the body and overcome stress and pain
Registration required. For more information, call 973-686-9100 or email info@aquariansun.net. |

On a Restricted Diet? Shopping Guide Can Save You Time and Energy
A trip to the grocery store is not so simple for individuals on restricted diets due to allergy, sensitivity or compromised health. While food labeling standards have improved, navigating the grocery aisle looking for "safe" foods can be intimidating, especially for those new to such a lifestyle. One company wants to make the shopping experience easier for those on gluten-free, casein-free, or soy-free diets.
Mara and Dainis Matison established Cecelia's Marketplace in 2006, soon after Mara was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. The couple struggled with Mara's huge lifestyle change, which included adhering to a strict gluten-free diet. Shopping trips to the grocery store were very frustrating. Spending time calling food manufacturers to find out if products were gluten-free seemed like a daily routine. The Matisons knew there had to be an easier way, so they decided to compile a gluten-free grocery shopping guide. This was the beginning of Cecelia's Marketplace. (The name, Cecelia's Marketplace, is derived from the word "celiac" as in Celiac Disease.) "Our research process involves contacting hundreds of food manufacturers nationwide to obtain gluten-free food lists," says Dainis Matison. "We research individual food products, read individual ingredient labels, and find new gluten-free foods that are available and being manufactured. All products listed in our guides are updated and re-researched every year when the new guide is updated." The latest edition will be published this summer.
