Local Green Architect Helps Families Achieve Good Health By Healing Their Homes
The green building movement has made us increasingly aware of the impact of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and sick building syndrome. When considering health from a holistic standpoint, maintaining a healthy home is integral.
Maia Gilman, a LEED accredited architect, is experienced in the field of green building, and takes this work a step farther in her own practice by examining the role energy plays in maintaining a healthy home. "Buildings, like living creatures, have their own health and ecology," says Gilman. "By focusing on the health needs of buildings, we contribute to the health needs of their occupants." Most people, regardless of how sensitive they are, have had the experience of walking into a building and sensing that something doesn't feel quite right. Gilman works with families who need help identifying issues in their homes--structural, environmental, or energy-related. Some find their way to Gilman after being diagnosed by a doctor with a chemical or environmental sensitivity, and others approach her to figure out what they haven't been able to. Clients might say:
"I can't think in here." "I think I'm allergic to my bedroom." "My child always gets irritated in that room." "My partner always starts coughing in that space." "I feel like someone is following me." "I saw spirits when I moved into my house."
Starting with a conversation with the client, Gilman, who is also a Reiki master, uses a variety of techniques beyond her traditional architecture training to intuitively explore what is going on in a house or space. Included in these methods is dowsing, an ancient technique traditionally used to find water for wells and metals, but one which Gilman also uses to check for electromagnetic fields; and Reiki, a traditional form of hands-on healing, which can be applied to buildings and outdoor spaces in much the same way as to a human being. "Just as energy in the body can become stuck," says Gilman, "so can energy in the home or land. Reiki can help gently adjust it." "I've worked in architecture and energy work for many years, and tried for a long time to understand the connection between the two," says Gilman. "After years of book study, I eventually learned to trust my own intuition in my work. Architecture is a true blend of art and science, and the link between the two for me is intuition." Gilman works with individual clients, as well as organizations and corporations. To learn more about Gilman's approach, visit her web site at www.mkgaia.com or call 347-837-6376. |
You're On A Massage Table, You're Relaxed, But You're Not Getting A Massage? A Look At Qigong Meridian Therapy
Qigong Meridian Therapy is not considered massage, says Debra Bernath, a local Qigong practitioner, but an "energy balancing session." Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qigong Meridian Therapy is based on "vital energy" or Qi, (pronounced "chee"), an unseen life force which permeates and informs all life forms. Qi allows the body to perform its many functions through the organs, enabling the blood to circulate. There are 12 major meridians which create a network of communication and energy. When everything is running smoothly we feel good, have energy and vitality, says Bernath. However, the flow of Qi can become stagnated, deficient or unbalanced. This happens most often from excessive stress, injury, or illness. In the human body, Qi travels through meridians or energy pathways. By stimulating meridians and points along the meridians, QI can be unblocked, and deficiency increased, thus helping the body to rebalance itself and thus heal. "Getting a QMT might feel like a massage because of the hands-on approach," Bernath says. "But the focus is not on the muscles like a traditional massage, but on the meridians and acupoints. It works deeper than the muscles. It unblocks Qi." Qigong Meridian Therapy is good for anyone who wants to rebalance their energy, and may be an added boost to acupuncture and other healing modalities.
