Local Physician Helps Parents Who Are Sick of Treating Infants and Children With Antibiotics

Morris"This and every cold and flu season, I frequently hear from moms who have infants and children with chronic ear infections," says Dr. Mark Morris, a cranial osteopath in Springfield. "And they're Girl with ear infectionconcerned about treating their kids with yet another antibiotic course."

In addition to the well-known dangers of repeat antibiotic use, such as bacterial resistance and diarrhea, studies show that infants who receive antibiotics in their first year of life are more likely to develop asthma by age seven.

Instead of medication, Dr. Morris uses the non-invasive treatment of osteopathic manual manipulation to offer infants long-term relief of pain and to prevent life-long hearing damage. The goal of osteopathic manual manipulation, Dr. Morris explains, is to "set the body up to heal itself." He also teaches mothers to support Eustachian tube function in their children with exercises at home.

"Children under the age of six have less than optimal Eustachian tube function," he says. "This can be further exacerbated by birth trauma." Gentle manipulation will assist in the proper movement of fluids in the head and promote drainage which can cure infections, and prevent future ones. MassageMoms Need Postnatal Massage Just As Much As Prenatal, Says Local Massage Therapist
Tell the truth.  You just had a baby.  You're exhausted, emotional,  sleep-deprived.  You are at the end of your rope just trying to keep up with the needs of a new baby (as well as older children and various household responsibilities).

It's rare that new moms take time to consider the physical and emotional toll their recent birth has taken on them, says local massage therapist, Lynda Fox Rountree.

"While I see many women in my practice for pre-natal massages -- women looking for relief from an aching back or swollen feet," Rountree says. "I hardly ever see a woman after she's had the baby, which is such a shame because massage offers so many benefits to post-natal women."

Breastfeeding moms often suffer from backache, shoulder stress or breast tenderness, symptoms that can be relieved by massage.  Breastfeeding or not, moms of newborns are often stressed simply from lack of sleep, let alone the overwhelming adjustment life with a new child brings.  "A happy and healthy mom often leads to a happy and healthy baby," says Rountree. "Therefore, taking care of your body and your emotional state will transfer directly to your new little one."

Rountree, who provides massage therapy in both Maplewood and Union, is happy for moms to bring infants with them while they receive massage therapy. For more information, contact her at 973.224.0660.
