Food Fight: The Contested History of Pasta - the View from Lybia

Former Tunisian President Habib Bourgeiba famously defined the Maghreb as the region in which couscous was the staple food, which would mean that the rice based diet of eastern Libya classes it with Egypt which Bourgeiba aimed to exclude with his food-centric political geography.

But if Libya is cut in half by the Bourgeiba-Couscous line, east and west are united by pasta. This is no doubt due to the years of Italian occupation, although Libyans have come up with their own adaptations like Makrona Mbakbka, which would look odd on an Italian restaurant's menu.

Such is its popularity that some Libyans will assure you that pasta hasn't just gone native, but that it is native. There's quite an elaborate story to prove this, with George Kurdahi (host of the Arab world's "Who Want's To Be a Millionaire", therefore font of all knowledge personified) correcting a contestant by informing him that it's Libya, not Italy, that is the original home of pasta. >>>
